COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 23 Boston University field hockey team closes out its opening weekend on Monday (Sept. 2) with a visit to No. 14 Ohio State. Game time at Buckeye Varsity Field is set for noon.
Monday's match-up, which will be streamed on BTN+, will feature a pair of 1-0 teams as the Terriers opened with a 4-1 win at Ohio on Saturday while the Buckeyes blanked Massachusetts, 7-0, on Friday.
Last season, Ohio State posted a 4-2 win over the Terriers in Boston by erasing a 2-1 deficit with three goals in a span of under four minutes. It was the second all-time meeting between the two schools with BU taking the first on Sept. 20, 1997, by a score of 1-0.
Junior Ailsa Connolly led the Terriers to their season-opening victory at Ohio with the second hat trick of her BU career. Freshman Ellie McIntyre added her first collegiate tally in her debut.
Ohio State reached the Big Ten semifinals last season and finished with a record of 12-8. The Buckeyes had six different goal scorers in their triumph over the Minutewomen on Friday with senior Esther Clotet Alsina leading the way with a pair of goals and an assist.
Clotet Alsina led OSU in scoring last season as a junior with 26 points on 11 goals and four assists. The Buckeyes also return junior Sammy Stone, who tallied 21 points (8g, 5a) in 2018 to finish second behind Clotet Alsina.
Sophomore Aaliyah Hernandez, who earned a three-save shutout on Friday, is back after an impressive rookie campaign in which she posted a 1.61 goals-against average to go along with a .659 save percentage.
Monday's contest will feature two of the top freshman classes in the country. Ohio State grabbed the top spot in the MAX Field Hockey domestic recruiting rankings thanks in large part to Mackenzie Allessie, who is the youngest player on the U.S. National Team. BU's class ranked ninth on the MAX list with McIntyre and goalkeeper Caroline Kelly, who picked up the win on Saturday in her collegiate debut, ranked among the top 50 freshmen in the country.
