BOSTON - The No. 25 Boston University field hockey team had an unfortunate start to its Patriot League schedule, dropping a 1-0 contest to visiting Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at New Balance Field.
The Bison notched the game's lone goal in the 37th minute and held on to hand the Terriers their first home loss in conference play since 2013.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bison notched the game's lone goal in the 37th minute and held on to hand the Terriers their first home loss in conference play since 2013.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After neither team recorded a shot in the opening quarter, BU got the first chances of the game with back-to-back corners in the 23rd minute.
- The Bucknell defense withstood the corners before the Bison earned a pair of their own five minutes later.
- Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Kelly made a trio of saves on the Bucknell corners to ensure a scoreless draw at the half.
- A play in transition led to Bucknell's goal as a pass through the midfield went off a BU stick before Maddie Rehak chased the ball down and created room in the left side of the circle.
- Rehak didn't get all of the ball on her attempt, resulting in a rainbow shot that barely eluded the reach of Kelly before dropping into the far corner at the 36:56 mark.
- BU threatened to equalize later in the third quarter on two shots from junior Ailsa Connolly but to no avail.
- The Terriers recorded five shots and earned three corners in the fourth quarter without allowing even an attempt but were unable to force overtime.
- BU pulled Kelly in favor of an extra field player for the final 5:23 of regulation.
- BU outshot Bucknell 13-9 and held a 5-2 advantage in corners.
- Kelly finished with five saves, as did Bucknell netminder Olivia Harris, who picked up her second shutout of the season.
- The loss ended a streak of 17 consecutive home wins in league play.
- The Terriers return to action next Sunday (Sept. 29) when they travel south to take on No. 4. UConn.
- Game time in Storrs is set for 1 p.m.
