February 14, 2020 | Softball
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Boosted by three multi-run homers and another strong pitching performance from junior Ali DuBois, the Boston University softball team opened the Winthrop Classic defeating both Georgetown, 6-0, and Towson, 5-4, on Friday afternoon.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Terriers (7-0) have tied the 1991 squad for the best start in program history. The reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Week DuBois (4-0, SV 2) first tallied a season-high 11 strikeouts in the complete-game shutout against the Hoyas (0-6) and followed up with two more in a 1.1-inning save against the Tigers (1-2).
Sophomore Bella Gargicevich-Almeida broke a scoreless deadlock in the third inning of the first game with her first career homer, a two-run blast to center. Classmate Emily Gant (3-0) started the second game in the circle and helped her cause with a two-run homer before sophomore Aliyah Huerta-Leipner broke the game open in the fifth on a three-run bomb.

GAME 1: BU 6, Georgetown 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first 12 combined batters were retired with DuBois striking out the side in the bottom of the second.
- Sophomore Nicole Amodio was hit by a pitch to open the third to set up Gargicevich-Almeida's homer to center for the 2-0 advantage.
- The Hoyas then hit Huerta-Leipner and walked freshman Caitlin Coker to put two on base.
- Freshman Audrey Sellers delivered a two-out RBI double and then scored along with Coker on junior Patricia Dun's two-RBI single toward short for the 5-0 advantage.
- Georgetown broke up DuBois' no-hit bid with a one-out double in the bottom half but stranded the runner on a strike out and groundout.
- Seeking an offensive spark, the Hoyas opened the bottom of the fourth with a single and double, but BU preserved the shutout thanks to Gargicevich's strong relay throw to home from second to set up Sellers tag.
- The Terriers added one more run in the seventh on Coker's double and sophomore Julia Handfield's RBI single.
- DuBois allowed a third double in the seventh but also had three strikeouts for the complete-game victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Huerta-Leipner opened the game with a hit-by-pitch before scoring on Gant's two-run bomb to center to grab the lead for good.
- Towson got on the scoreboard in the third with a walk, stolen base and two-out RBI single.
- The Tigers followed with another single and walk to load the bases before Gant froze a batter for the strikeout.
- Juniors Marina Sylvestri and Maya Kipfmiller started the fifth with back-to-back singles before Huerta-Leipner delivered a two-out, three-run homer to center for the 5-1 advantage.
- Trying to extend the lead, Dun and Sylvestri hit back-to-back one-out singles in the sixth after 2019 All-CAA Rookie Sarah Johnson was replaced in the circle, but the Tigers earned a ground out and strikeout.
- Towson began to mount a rally in the bottom half with a hit-by-pitch, single and two-out, two-RBI triple.
- DuBois appeared in the circle and earned a strikeout to maintain 5-3 advantage.
- The Tigers cut the deficit to one in the seventh by taking advantage of an error with a two-out RBI single but ended up stranding two on base, as DuBois collected the save.
- The Terriers had three homers today after Huerta-Leipner hit BU's lone bomb at the Stetson Lead-Off Classic last weekend.
- DuBois is just two wins away from tying BU Hall of Famer Robyn King ('01) for the No. 3 spot in all-time victories at 57.
- DuBois is now tied with Mary Colleran ('00) at No. 4 with 21 career shutouts.
- Coker led the offense with three combined hits on the day.
- Besides owning a 2-0 record against Georgetown, BU improved to 14-5 all-time against Towson in the first meeting between the two programs since the Tigers prevailed in the 2001 America East tournament.
- BU will resume the three-day tournament on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 10 a.m. against three-time defending Southern Conference regular season champion UNC Greensboro.
- The Spartans own a 2-1 record, last claiming a 5-2 win in 2002 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
- The Terriers and Eastern Kentucky will face off at 12:30 p.m. in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
