Junior Rachel Borzymowski scored her first goal as a Terrier and sophomore Thalia Steenssens gave BU a 2-1 lead late in the third quarter but the visiting Black Bears scored twice in the final quarter to earn the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half was scoreless thanks to the Terriers successfully defending eight Maine corners over the first two quarters and allowing just two shots on goal.
- The Black Bears opened the scoring in the 36th minute when an entry ball from the right side by Hannah Abbott got through traffic and landed on the stick of Madisyn Hartley, who was open in front of the cage and buried the chance.
- The Terriers got an equalizer under a minute later when Borzymowski took a direct insert from senior Rebecca Janes and drilled a shot to the boards for her first collegiate tally.
- BU used another corner to take the lead as Steenssens sent home a rebound at 39:26 following a pair of saved shots.
- After BU took a 3-2 lead in the final quarter, the Black Bears rallied in the fourth and escaped with a road win.
- Hana Davis tied the contest in the 48th minute at the right post when she popped a second effort past the reach of BU goalkeeper Caroline Kelly.
- The game-winner came off a corner as Poppy Lambert took an insert from Brittany Smith and found the back of the cage from the top of the circle with 7:48 to play.
- The Terriers had three fourth-quarter corners but were unable to take advantage of them.
- Kelly made eight saves for the Terriers.
- Sunday's result marked the fifth straight BU-Maine meeting that was decided by one goal.
- Maine outshot the Terriers, 16-10, and held a 13-5 advantage in corners.
- Mia Borley earned the win in goal with a five-save performance.
- The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 9) when they host Lafayette in a Patriot League matchup.
- Game time at New Balance Field is set for noon.
