BOSTON - Junior
Jay O'Brien and sophomore
Dylan Peterson each lit the lamp to help the Boston University men's ice hockey team earn a 2-2 tie at No. 18 Northeastern on Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
After overtime, BU (4-8-2, 3-5-2 HE) and Northeastern (9-4-1, 5-3-1) dueled in an eight-round shootout, with the Huskies eventually earning the extra point in the Hockey East standings.
Juniors
Domenick Fensore and
Robert Mastrosimone assisted on O'Brien's first-period marker while juniors
Ethan Phillips and
Alex Vlasic provided the assists on Peterson's power-play strike in the second stanza. Sophomore
Drew Commesso made 29 saves, including several nice stops during the shootout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northeastern opened the scoring at 13:40 of the first period but BU responded just 1:03 later.
- Playing 4-on-4, Fensore raced up the left wing and fired a shot on target. Devon Levi (33 saves) kicked the attempt aside, but the rebound went right to O'Brien, who made no mistake for his second goal of the season.
- Commesso made a great stop on a 2-on-1 chance with 12:30 remaining in the middle frame to keep the game tied.
- The Terriers took a 2-1 lead at 15:50 of the second stanza thanks to a power-play goal. Vlasic and Philips combined to get the puck down low to Peterson at the left post. The sophomore forward's turnaround attempt kicked off a Northeastern skate and past Levi.
- Like the Terriers, Northeastern took advantage of a lucky bounce to even the score at 2-2 with a power-play goal early in the third.
- BU pressured the Northeastern end throughout the third period in search of a winner, but the Huskies and Levi were able to force overtime.
- After a scoreless overtime, freshman Brian Carrabes rang the post to open the shootout, after which the Huskies scored on their first attempt.
- Needing a goal to keep the shootout going, O'Brien roofed a shot past Levi to extend the contest.
- Both goaltenders were on their game, but a Jack Hughes attempt somehow snuck under Commesso's pads in the eighth round to give Northeastern the extra point in the league standings.
