Terriers Claim DH Sweep over Stony Brook in Battle of Preseason Favorites
March 20, 2021 | Softball
BOSTON – Seeing its first action at home in nearly two years, the two-time defending Patriot League champion Boston University softball team claimed a doubleheader sweep over America East preseason favorite Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. Only briefly trailing once, the Terriers pulled out a 6-3 game-one win before shutting out the Seawolves in game two, 3-0.
With the two victories over their former conference rivals, BU (10-1) extends its in-season win streak to nine games while also pushing its now three-year running home win streak to 23 games, which includes three PL tournament wins in both 2018 and 2019. Pitching proved to be key again, as senior Ali DuBois (8-0) and sophomore Allison Boaz (2-0) held the Seawolves (7-5) to a combined .180 batting average on the day with Boaz collecting her second shutout of the season.
Senior Jen Horita provided the offensive spark in the first contest with a clutch two-out, two-RBI single in the fourth that helped the Terriers grab the lead for good. Sophomore Caitlin Coker led off the second game with a triple and quickly scored on a wild pitch for BU's only needed run. They were joined by freshman Lauren Keleher, junior Emily Gant and junior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner in recording two hits apiece on the day.

GAME 1: BU 6, Stony Brook 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following three scoreless innings, the starting pitcher and two-time America East Player of the Year Melissa Rahrich led off with a full-count single, took second on a sac bunt and scored on a two-out RBI single for the 1-0 advantage.
- Huerta-Leipner hit a one-out single in the bottom half before eventually moving to third on Gant's bunt single and junior NIcole Amodio's fly out.
- Facing an 0-2 count, Horita battled back to line a 3-2 pitch down the left field line with two outs to pull ahead for good, 2-1.
- Freshman Kayla Roncin followed with a RBI double to left and eventually scored the fourth run with the help of a fielding error and wild pitch.
- Reigning America East Rookie of the Week Kyra McFarland cut BU's lead in half with an RBI triple but was stranded at third after DuBois earned a ground out, strikeout and foul out to left.
- The Terriers pushed the lead back to three runs on singles by Keleher, Huerta-Leipner and Gant along with Amodio's bases-loaded walk.
- Stony Brook got on the scoreboard again with a two-out RBI single to left, but Coker came back with one of her own after sophomore Audrey Sellers got hit by a pitch and swiped second.
- The Seawolves earned a walk and hit by pitch with two outs to bring the game-tying run to the plate before DuBois earned another ground out to seal the 6-3 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SBU had an opportunity to strike first with a lead-off single and sacrifice bunt before Boaz earned a ground out and fly out to center to keep the game scoreless.
- In BU's first at-bat of the game, Coker ripped a 1-2 pitch from Dawn Bodrug (4-2), owner of a 0.74 ERA in 2020, to left center and scored on a wild pitch to score the first run.
- After being hit by a pitch, Keleher took second on Huerta-Leipner's walk and scored when SBU mishandled Gant's sacrifice bunt attempt.
- The Seawolves committed another costly error trying to get a double play after throwing Huerta-Leipner out at home on a grounder, which allowed Gant to score and push the lead to 3-0.
- Trying to add another run, Amodio was hit by a pitch in the fourth and took second on Horita's sacrifice bunt, but Bodrug earned a strikeout and pop up to end the threat.
- The Seawolves put the pressure on Boaz with a lead-off double and walk before loading the bases on a one-out walk.
- Boaz earned back-to-back strikeouts, one looking and the second swinging, for the shutout.
- The 23-game home win streak is the program's longest after the Terriers went 18-0 in 2001 and won their first four games in 2002.
- Boaz extended her scoreless inning streak to 12 innings following her no-hit performance at Merrimack a week prior.
- DuBois moved to 68 career wins, one shy of tying for No. 2 in the Patriot League record book, and went 33 innings without being charged with a run before SBU struck in the fourth inning.
- Amodio now has a team-high 13 RBIs in 10 games this season after totaling nine last season in 22 appearances.
- Coker tripled for the first time since accomplishing the feat at Providence in the season opener.
- The Terriers improved to 26-19 all-time against the Seawolves after hosting SBU for the first time since claiming a 2012 America East semifinal victory.
- The Terriers will make a return trip to BC on Tuesday (March 23) after posting a 5-0 win over the Eagles this past Thursday.
- First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on the digital platform, ACC Network Extra.
- In the last meeting, DuBois collected eight strikeouts with Horita, Coker and Huerta-Leipner recording two hits apiece.
