April 27, 2021 | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After helping lead the Boston University softball team to a four-game series sweep against Holy Cross, juniors Emily Gant and Nicole Amodio have earned Patriot League weekly honors, the conference office announced Tuesday morning.
Gant tallied 17 strikeouts in 14.2 innings of work en route to a pair of wins and a save to claim her second-career PL Pitcher of the Week award, while Amodio batted a staggering .778 with seven RBIs and four runs for her second-ever PL Player of the Week award.
The announcement gives head coach Ashley Waters and the Terriers 13 combined weekly awards this season, as BU sits atop the PL standings at 17-1 with a 28-2 overall record. With senior Ali DuBois (5x) and sophomore Allison Boaz previously recognized, BU has now had three pitchers honored in one season for the first time since 2012 (Holli Floetker, Whitney Tuthill, Erin Schuppert).
Two weeks ago, BU had a third player, sophomore Caitlin Coker, tabbed the top offensive player for the first time since 2018 (Alex Heinen, Madi Killebrew, Jilee Schanda). Now with Amodio being recognized a second time after senior Jen Horita accomplished the feat on April 13, the Terriers have had at least two players earn multiple offensive player of the week awards in one season for the first time since 2007 (Christy Leath, Chiya Louie, Brandi Shields).
Gant started the Holy Cross series in impressive fashion with 11 strikeouts against two hits in a 7-0 shutout victory. In the third contest with two runners on base, she collected the final two outs with another strikeout to earn her second career save in a 5-1 victory. The Grove City, Ohio, native ended the weekend with a second shutout performance, holding the Crusaders to seven hits with the help of five strikeouts to lower her season ERA to 1.08, 18th-best mark in the nation.
Amodio has had a breakout junior campaign, totaling nine doubles alone in 30 games after earning five over her first 79 appearances. She went a perfect 5-for-5 on day one against the Crusaders, first batting 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the 11-3 game-one win. The Phoenix, Arizona, native then went 2-for-2 with a run in the game-two win and followed up with a pair of RBIs and run scored in the third victory. Her biggest hit came in the fourth game when she broke a scoreless deadlock with a two-out, three-run homer to right. She's now batting .377 with 25 RBIs, 11 more than the next closest Terrier.
The Terriers will next host Lafayette in a four-game series on May 1-2. Both doubleheaders are set to begin at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
