BOSTON – After earning NFCA All-Region and Patriot League All-Academic Team honors, Boston University softball junior Emily Gant and sophomore Caitlin Coker both earned a spot on the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District I First Team.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. District I compromises NCAA Division I institutions in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Both Gant and Coker were key contributors in helping the now three-time defending PL champion Terriers finish No. 2 nationally in ERA (1.26) and 13th in batting average (.320) while also boasting a 3.52 GPA for the spring semester.
A native of Grove City, Ohio, Gant is a two-time All-Region and All-Conference honoree. She claimed her second All-Tournament Team award in May by hitting 4-for-10 with two RBIs and team-high five runs scored while also collecting a save. In the circle for the season, Gant went 5-2 with a 1.18 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 47.1 innings of work. At the plate, she recorded a .387 batting average with 23 RBIs and 31 runs scored. She finished the year as only one of two nationally alongside Clemson's Valerie Cagle to post a batting average above .380 and an ERA below 1.20. In the classroom, she has a 3.87 cumulative GPA while majoring in health science.
Coker had a breakout second season, starting all 40 games in the lead-off position and becoming the first BU sophomore since Jamie Haas ('05) to claim Player of the Year accolades from a conference. The Downingtown, Pennsylvania, native batted .403 while adding 43 runs scored, 17 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. She tallied 15 walks and 11 hit-by-pitches to claim an on-base percentage of .503. Coker scored the first run in the first inning of all three PL tournament games to help the Terriers three-peat as conference champions for the first time in program history. In the classroom, she owns a 3.79 GPA and is majoring in biology.
The announcement marks the first time since 2000 (Amy Parker, Nili Schnairsohn) that two Terriers were recognized by CoSIDA. Both Gant and Coker advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot with first-, second- and third-team honorees to be announced in late July. Jayme Mask ('14) was the last at BU to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades.
