BOSTON – In the return of Terrier Tailgate, the Boston University women's soccer team struck first, but UMass netted the ensuing two goals to take a 2-1 decision Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
The senior duo of
Margaret Berry and
Jenna Oldham connected in the 21st minute, as Oldham drove a corner that Berry headed in to get the crowd of over 4,500 on their feet. The Minutewomen responded with the equalizer in the 34th minute, and delivered what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 47th minute.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Gretchen Bennett was up for an early test, knocking down a one-timer from the center of the 12-yard box in the 12th minute.
- Working off its first corner kick of the game, Oldham arced a ball towards the middle of the box, where Berry elevated between a pair of defenders to flick in her third goal of the season.
- The Minutewomen swung the momentum with the equalizer late in the opening half with a one-timer off a cross from the right wing to make it an even 1-1 game.
- Coming out of the break, UMass sent a through ball and fended off BU's stingy defense to score from 15 yards out, flipping the scoreboard to 2-1 just over a minute into the frame.
- Junior Geovanna Pereira, Oldham and sophomore Abigail McNulty ripped a quartet of shots within a five-minute span midway through the second half, though none could get past the UMass keeper.
- Pereira had three looks in front of the net in the final three minutes, but the Minutewomen held on to hand the Terriers their second straight defeat.

- All three of Berry's goals have come via header, with two of them coming off Oldham corner kicks, and all three have been assisted by Oldham.
