Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Terriers Beat Crusaders, 2-1, For Fifth-Straight Victory

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Morgan Fagan tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the season, redshirt senior Jenna Oldham added her first of the year, and the Boston University women's soccer team captured its fifth-consecutive win in a 2-1 result over Holy Cross on Wednesday evening at Smith Stadium.

BU (9-6, 5-1 PL) went ahead just 1:36 into the game, only for the Crusaders (0-10-4, 0-5-1 PL) to equalize in the 15th minute. However, Oldham buried the go-ahead tally in the 26th minute, helping BU gain sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings.

Oldham finished with a game-high four shots, two of which were on target. Senior goalkeeper Gretchen Bennett made two second-half saves in the effort.

Melanie Lytle registered Holy Cross' lone goal, with Ashley Blaka recording the assist. Izzy Castagnetti posted two saves between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fagan picked up her goal after stealing the ball from a Crusader defender, shooting from the top of the penalty box and going bar-down to beat Castagnetti.
  • In the 10th minute, senior Kayla Ross headed a corner kick insert from Oldham just above the crossbar near the left post.
  • Lytle occupied the middle when she tucked the ball into the left post 14:58 into the match.
  • BU appeared to take the lead on a direct kick in the 18th minute when Castagnetti couldn't handle the shot cleanly, but the officials ruled a Terrier foul on a Crusader in the box.
  • Oldham notched her tally on a 30-yard kick in the upper-right corner of the goal.
  • Senior Marli Rajacich narrowly missed a 20-yard chance by the left sideline, then Holy Cross' Cerys Balmer was off on a header from a corner kick in the final seconds of the first half.
  • In the 64th minute, Oldham almost secured a brace with another long-range free kick, but it clanged off the left post.
  • Five minutes later, on a restart when the official accidentally made contact with the ball, freshman Giulianna Gianino whipped a shot near the bar that Castagnetti tipped over. The ensuing BU corner kick did not yield a shot.
  • Bennett collected her saves against Katie Quinn and Claire Carew in the 75th and 83rd minutes, respectively.
  • Fagan nearly added her second goal with under three minutes to play, getting behind the defense for a 1-on-1 play down the middle. Her shot ringed off the left post.
