HAMILTON, N.Y. - Graduate student Marina Sylvestri drove in four runs and sophomore Kayla Roncin went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Boston University softball team to a 13-7 win at Colgate on Sunday afternoon.
BU (34-13, 12-0 PL) completed the weekend sweep to extend its NCAA-best win streak to 23 games and improve to 12-0 in Patriot League play. Colgate fell to 17-20 and 7-5 in the conference.
Every Terrier in the lineup had at least one hit, led by Roncin's three. Senior Emily Gant went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, scored three runs and was joined by Sylvestri, Roncin and senior Nicole Amodio with two RBIs on Sunday. Graduate student Jen Horita went 2-for-4 and also scored three runs. Sophomore Lauren Keleher recorded two hits, including a double, and scored twice.
In the circle, junior Lizzy Avery (16-8) pitched the first 4.2 innings before classmate Allison Boaz recorded the final seven outs.
BU outscored Colgate, 38-11, in the sweep and combined for 47 hits across the three games, including 16 on Sunday. The Terriers have also averaged 11.0 runs per game in their six Patriot League road contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers struck first in the second inning. Horita led off with a four-pitch walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sylvestri was then hit by a pitch and also stole second to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out.
- Amodio then grounded out to third, but Horita scored and Sylvestri advanced to third on the throw to first.
- Senior Bella Gargicevich-Almeida then drove in Sylvestri with an RBI single up the middle.
- The Raiders looked to respond in their half of the second inning and had two runners on with two outs, but Avery earned a swinging strikeout to end the threat.
- BU added to its lead in the top of the third. After Colgate retired the leadoff hitter, Roncin reached on an infield single. Gant then laid down a perfect bunt single to put two runners on for Horita, who singled through the left side to plate Roncin. Sylvestri then knocked home Gant on a groundout to third before Amodio singled home Horita.
- Roncin pushed the lead to 6-0 with a sac fly in the top of the fourth, but the Raiders responded with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Terrier lead to 6-2.
- BU answered immediately, as Horita led off the top of the fifth with a single and then scored from first on a double by Sylvestri.
- Colgate rallied in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to make it a 7-5 contest.
- Any momentum the Raiders had went away in the top of the sixth.
- Junior Caitlin Coker began the frame with a double and then advanced to third on a single by Keleher, who then stole second. Roncin delivered an RBI single to knock home both Coker and Keleher and make it 9-5.
- After a Gant walk, Horita reached on a fielders choice before Sylvestri drove in both Roncin and Gant to extend the lead to 11-5 with nobody out.
- BU loaded the bases with two outs but Colgate induced a pop up to keep the deficit at six.
- The Raiders loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth and got two runs across on an RBI groundout and a wild pitch.
- Gant closed the scoring for BU with a two-run blast in the top of the 7th with Boaz retiring the Raiders in order to end the game.
