Softball Makes Program and Patriot League History with Eight NFCA All-Region Awards
May 19, 2022 | Softball
BOSTON – Following a historic regular season that featured a 27-game win streak, the Boston University softball team shattered both a program and Patriot League record with eight Terriers earning NFCA Division I All-Region awards, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Thursday afternoon.
Led by 2022 PL Coach of the Year Ashley Waters, BU was just one of four programs to have all eight nominees recognized, joining NFCA's No. 4 nationally-ranked Arkansas (South), No. 1 Oklahoma (Central) and No. 3 Virginia Tech (Mid-Atlantic). Junior pitcher Lizzy Avery, junior pitcher Allison Boaz, senior outfielder Emily Gant, sophomore outfielder Lauren Keleher and sophomore shortstop Kayla Roncin helped the Terriers set a program and PL record with five All-Region First Team honors. Both junior third baseman Caitlin Coker and graduate student outfielder Jen Horita earned Second Team accolades, while senior Nicole Amodio received Third Team placement.
BU's five NFCA All-Region First Team awards topped the previous high of three set multiple times with the eight total honors surpassing the previous high of five set at BU in both 2021 (Patriot League) and 1994 (America East). The 2000 Colgate squad was the only other in the PL to have previously earned five awards. Adding to the significance of the announcement, the Terriers were just one of four teams alongside Arkansas, Oregon State (Pacific) and Virginia Tech to have two pitchers claim All-Region First Team accolades.
All eight Terriers spotlighted by the NFCA previously claimed All-Patriot League honors earlier in the month with Boaz being named PL Pitcher of the Year and Roncin receiving Player of the Year accolades. Amodio was also tabbed the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finishing the 2022 campaign with the third most wins in program history at 40-17 along with its fourth straight PL regular season title, the Terriers had notable non-conference wins at then-No. 13 Georgia, Mountain West regular season champion San Diego State, Big East regular season champion UConn, CAA regular season champion Delaware and the Big West Conference's top two squads, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.
The 2022 NFCA Division I All-America teams, voted on by the NFCA DI All-American Committee, will be announced on Wednesday, June 1.
