Commesso, Hutson Earn Hockey East Weekly Honors
January 30, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
AMESBURY, Mass. - Junior Drew Commesso and freshman Lane Hutson of the Boston University men's ice hockey team each received a weekly award from Hockey East, the league announced on Monday.
Commesso was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week while Hutson earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week and fourth time overall. Both players were excellent in the Terriers' weekend sweep of Boston College.
Hutson had a pair of two-assist games against the Eagles and has now put together four straight two-assist efforts. Playing a ton of minutes in both games, Hutson assisted on Saturday's game-winner and finished as a plus-6 with two blocked shots. No league defender had more points or a higher plus-minus than Hutson this past weekend. For the season, Hutson leads all NCAA defensemen with 31 points and is second among all NCAA blue liners with nine goals and 22 assists. Hutson is one of just four league skaters with over 30 points and is second only to Terrier senior Matt Brown among Hockey East players in assists.
Commesso was simply sensational in the Terriers' weekend sweep. On Saturday in Chestnut Hill, he stopped 40 of 41 shots, including all 22 he faced in the third period, to earn a 3-1 win. He also made 24 saves in Friday's victory, but it was his timely stops in the first period and early in the third period that allowed BU to emerge victorious. Thirteen of his 40 saves on Saturday came on the penalty kill as the Terriers held BC to a 1-for-5 mark on the power play. Commesso's 64 saves ranked second for the weekend among league goaltenders.
BU, which is No. 3 in both national polls this week, will travel to Maine for a Friday night tilt at Alfond Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
