Seventeen Terriers Named to NHL Opening-Night Rosters
October 10, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - Seventeen former Boston University men's ice hockey standouts have been named to NHL opening-night rosters for the 2023-24 season.
That number ranks third in all of college hockey and no other Hockey East school boasts more alumni on NHL opening-night rosters than BU, with Terriers skating on 14 different teams. Four of those Terriers - Charlie Coyle, Matt Grzelcyk, Charlie McAvoy and Kevin Shattenkirk - play locally for the Boston Bruins. Nick Bonino (New York Rangers), A.J. Greer (Calgary Flames), Matt Nieto (Pittsburgh Penguins), Evan Rodrigues (Florida Panthers) and Shattenkirk are all on new teams to start the 2023-24 campaign. Jack Eichel enters the season as a reigning Stanley Cup champion, having won the game's ultimate prize this past June with Vegas.
In addition to the talented Terriers taking the ice this season, an NCAA-leading two alumni will be serving as NHL head coaches. David Quinn returns for his second year with the San Jose Sharks while Mike Sullivan enters his ninth season behind the Pittsburgh bench.
A total of 92 Terriers have played at least one game in the NHL, most recently Shane Bowers last season with the Colorado Avalanche.
