CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Boston University softball rallied to force extra innings but ultimately came up short in a rematch with defending MAAC champion Canisius, 6-5, to end Charleston's Cougar Classic Sunday morning.
The Terriers (7-2) scored the game-tying run with two outs in the sixth and grabbed a 6-5 lead in the ninth using international scoring rules, but the Golden Griffins (4-1) were able to walk off with a two-out, two-RBI single.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU started off strong with junior Lauren Keleher earning a lead-off walk and scoring on classmate Kayla Roncin's RBI triple.
- Senior Caitlin Coker drew an errant throw from short to help Roncin score but ended up stranded at third, as Alexis Churchill earned three fly outs.
- Senior Allison Boaz allowed a one-out single and walk before bouncing back with a strike out and ground out.
- Sophomore Tyesha Williams extended BU's lead to 3-0 in the second by singling to short, stealing second and scoring on Keleher's RBI single.
- Boaz had retired eight straight batters before Canisius forced a pitching change with four runs off five hits in the fourth.
- Following back-to-back singles and a ground out, 2022 All-MAAC First Team member Gianna Fazzolari delivered a three-run bomb to left center.
- The Golden Griffins added two more singles to grab the 4-3 advantage and eventually loaded the bases on a walk and hit-by-pitch before freshman Kasey Ricard (3-1) prevented further damage with a line out to right.
- In the sixth, BU took advantage of a hit-by-pitch and two-out walk with Williams driving a single to center to plate junior pinch runner Kate Pryor.
- Both teams stranded runners at third in the eighth inning.
- Placed at second, graduate student Nicole Amodio took third on freshman Brooke Deppiesse's sac bunt and scored on junior Lauren Nett's sac fly to right.
- In the bottom half, Ricard started strongly with a fly out and pop up, but the Golden Griffins kept the game alive with back-to-back walks.
- Facing an 0-2 count, Tiara Johnson walked off with a two-RBI single to left for the win.
GAME NOTES
- Williams earned two hits for the first time this season and third time in her career. She's the seventh Terrier to earn multiple hits in a game this year.
- Roncin became the fourth Terrier to record a triple this season.
- Ricard pitched five scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts against four walks before the walk-off at-bat.
- BU moved to 1-1 this season in one-run decisions after losing its first extra-inning game of the season.
- The Terriers' five runs were the most scored in defeat since falling to Utah State last season, 6-5 (8), also in extra innings. The loss snapped a 30-game win streak in which BU scored five or more runs.
- Canisius avenged Friday's 9-3 loss to cut BU's all-time series lead to 2-1.
