Hutson Named National Rookie of the Month
February 7, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - Freshman Lane Hutson of the Boston University men's ice hockey team has been named the National Rookie of the Month, the Hockey Commissioners Association announced on Tuesday.
Hutson, chosen Monday as the Hockey East Player of the Month, was sensational for the Terriers in January as he helped BU go 7-1-0 and vault to the top of the league standings. He led Hockey East in both points (13) and assists (11) in January, notching a point in all eight games he played. Hutson began the month by providing the primary assist on Team USA's overtime goal in the bronze medal game of the World Junior Championship. He then flew from Nova Scotia to Phoenix the next day to notch an assist in the Terriers' 5-1 win over Air Force on Jan. 6. He was the first rookie since March 2020 to be selected as the league's Player of the Month.
A two-time Hockey East Defender of the Month, Hutson is on an 11-game point streak, having notched 19 points (3g, 16a) in that span, including a league-high 13 in January (2g, 11a). He closed January by recording at least two assists in five straight games, totaling 13 points in that stretch. He currently leads all NCAA defensemen with 36 points and 27 assists, with his 27 assists tops among all Hockey East skaters. Hutson is one of just four league skaters with over 30 points and is second only to Terrier senior Matt Brown among Hockey East players in points.
