SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Continuing the San Diego Classic, the Boston University softball team recorded a doubleheader shutout split with a 2-0 win over Long Beach State and 2-0 loss to host San Diego State Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers (13-5) managed only seven combined hits on the day while committing four errors but had strong pitching performances from senior Allison Boaz (7-2) for the win over LBSU (6-12) and also from freshman Kasey Ricard in relief to keep the Aztecs (12-6) within striking distance.

Freshman Brooke Deppiesse delivered the clutch hit with a go-ahead two-out, two-RBI single for BU's only runs of the DH.

GAME 1: BU - 2, Long Beach State - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

LBSU threatened with a lead-off single and sac bunt that advanced the runner to third, but Boaz got out of the jam with an infield pop up and ground out.
Junior Kayla Roncin and senior Caitlin Coker recorded back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom half and advanced a bag on a wild pitch before scoring on Deppiesse's single up the middle for the 2-0 advantage.
The Beach had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the second with a lead-off double, but Boaz tallied two strikeouts and then a fly out following an error to maintain the shutout.
The Terriers tried to add an insurance run but stranded two on base in the bottom of the second and left the bases loaded in the third.
LBSU applied pressure with the lead-off runner getting on base in innings 3-6 and then another runner reaching first via an error in the seventh, but Boaz remained unrattled and never let the other batters get the ball into the outfield to seal the victory.

GAME 2: San Diego State - 2, BU - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

Entering the contest receiving votes in multiple national polls, the Aztecs got on the board quickly against senior Lizzy Avery (2-1) with a lead-off bunt single and RBI double from SDSU's All-Mountain West honoree Jillian Celis, who was thrown out trying to stretch her hit into a triple.
After SDSU earned another single and two-out walk, Ricard entered the circle and induced an infield pop up to keep the deficit at one run.
Coker broke up All-Big East member and DePaul Transfer Sarah Lehman's no-hit bid in the fourth with a one-out double, but Lehman got pop ups in the air to end the threat.
The Aztecs added an insurance run with the help of a single and throwing error with a one-out RBI sac fly to right in the bottom half.
Keleher tried to mount a rally with a leadoff triple to start the sixth against All-MWC honoree Dee Dee Hernandez, but Hernandez kept the ball in the infield while retiring the next six Terriers to claim her third save of the season along with a combined shutout.

DOUBLEHEADER NOTES

Boaz handed BU its seventh shutout of the season while becoming the first Terrier in eight all-time meetings to blank LBSU.
Boaz now ranks No. 8 all-time at BU with 13 career shutouts.
Deppiesse now leads the team in RBIs with 16.
The Terriers were handed their first shutout loss of the year by the Aztecs after previously being held to one run on two occasions.

The Terriers will make the short trek to the University of San Diego for a rematch with SDSU on Sunday (March 5) at 3:30 p.m. ET.
BU will then face USD at 6 p.m. ET to conclude the San Diego Classic.
