ATHENS, Ga. – Set to make its 12th appearance in the NCAA tournament and first as nationally-ranked program, the No. 25 and reigning Patriot League champion Boston University softball team will open the double-elimination Athens Regional against ACC power and No. 24/23 Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon with the ACC Network broadcast slated for 2 p.m.
Fans will also be able to stream the contest along with all other NCAA regional games on ESPN+.
Winner of 15 conference tournament titles, the Terriers (51-8) are 7-22 all-time in NCAA play, reaching the regional finals in 1996 and 2009. Owner of Power 5 wins this spring over then-No. 12 Baylor (2-0), Georgia Tech (2-0) and Penn State (4-0, 7-5), they will be seeking their first postseason victory since eliminating then-American Athletic Conference champion Louisville in 2014.
Virginia Tech fell to Florida State in the ACC semifinals, while regional host Georgia lost to South Carolina in the SEC quarterfinal round as both Power 5 teams earned at-large berths. The Bulldogs will meet North Carolina Central University at 4:30 p.m. with the Eagles making their NCAA tournament debut after capturing their first MEAC title.
BU has three previous meetings with Virginia Tech taking all three. They last met in 2010, as the Hokies posted a 3-1 victory in Clearwater, Florida. BU earned a split in the first-ever meeting with Georgia one year ago, first posting a 6-1 win over the 13th-ranked Bulldogs and then a 8-1 loss in Athens. BU has never faced the Eagles.
