May 9, 2023 | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After claiming its fifth straight Patriot League regular season title along with a record-breaking 28-game win streak and highlight victories over two current nationally-ranked programs, the Boston University softball team claimed all five major year-end awards and a program record-tying 10 total All-Conference honors, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Currently No. 3 in the NCAA at 85 hits and winner of the Patriot League regular season triple crown (.434 batting average, nine homers, 51 RBIs), junior shortstop Kayla Roncin repeated as Patriot League Player of the Year and received the Terriers' sixth consecutive honor. Senior Allison Boaz (22-4, 1.38 ERA) also repeated as Pitcher of the Year by claiming the program's fifth straight award by finishing the regular season ranked in the top 25 nationally for ERA, wins and shutouts (7). Freshman Kasey Ricard (19-2, 1.74 ERA) claimed BU's second PL Rookie of the Year award in three seasons and fourth overall with a league-high 187 strikeouts, while senior third baseman and 2021 Player of the Year Caitlin Coker earned the Terriers' first Defensive Player of the Year honor since 2019. Eighth-year head coach Ashley Waters three-repeated as Coach of the Year with her fourth overall year-end honor from the PL after helping BU set both a program and conference record at 48 regular season wins.
Graduate student Nicole Amodio, graduate student Emily Gant (DP) and junior Lauren Keleher (OF) joined Boaz, Coker, Ricard and Roncin on the first team, while freshman Brooke Deppiesse (2B), junior Lauren Nett (OF) and senior Audrey Sellers (2B) were named to the second team. The Terriers swept all five major athletic awards for the first time since 2018 and earned 10 honors for the second time ever, matching the 2019 squad.
The major award recipients will all be recognized prior to the first pitch of Thursday's (May 11) Patriot League tournament opener against Bucknell. The start time is slated for 12 p.m. at the BU Softball Field.
