Terriers Come Back For 2-2 Draw Against Eagles

BOYDS, Md. – Junior Giulianna Gianino and sophomore Kat Slott each scored second-half goals to help the Boston University women's soccer team secure a 2-2 draw against American on Saturday afternoon at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

BU (4-7-6, 4-0-4 PL) fell behind 2-0 in the 72nd minute as the Eagles (6-5-3, 2-4-2 PL) vied for their first-ever win over the Terriers. However, Gianino halved the deficit five minutes later, and Slott leveled the match in the 83rd minute.

Juniors Helene Tyburczy and Mackenzie Stickelman each notched assists on Gianino's and Slott's goals, respectively. Freshman goalkeeper Bridget Carr made two saves.

Bella Vozar and Nariah Goldman found the back of the net for American with helpers from Lailah Stewart and Phoebe Merrigan. Netminders Addison Roemer and Julia Kato combined for six saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU had two shots in the game's first 16 minutes, with senior Allison Hanlon credited with a shot on goal, then junior Mackenzie Stickelman's shot in the 16th minute blocked before reaching the box.
  • In the 24th minute, Carr racked up her first save when she lined up Avery Klingensmith's 30-yard blast.
  • Moments later, junior Margy Porta applied pressure in the box as Roemer fell with two American defenders in the area. Porta gained possession for a shot near the left post, but it was blocked in front.
  • Gianino had two consecutive chances around the 29th minute. Her first flick rolled wide left, then a 25-yard blast nearly bounced in front of the right post before Roemer corralled the ball.
  • American earned a free kick in the 44th minute. After BU initially cleared the ball, the Eagles generated pressure inside the box. Merrigan found an open lane to dish off to Vozar, who sent the ball past Carr to make it 1-0 heading into half time.
  • The Terriers opened the half with a chance when junior Mackenzie Stickelman entered the box and gave off to Porta, whose right-footed flick floated to Kato for the 48th-minute save.
  • In the 58th minute, after American initially cleared a Terrier corner kick, senior Hugrún Helgadóttir rocketed a 20-yard shot off the woodwork. Sophomore Samantha Aronson tried to send home the loose rebound from five yards out, but Kato snagged her shot.
  • American made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute. After a turnover at midfield, the Eagles quickly burst towards the net, where Goldman volleyed a shot over the outstretched Carr towards the upper-middle of the goal.
  • BU got on the scoreboard in transition in the 77th minute. Tyburczy raced down the field from end-to-end and sent the stretch pass to Gianino, who caught up to it and potted her eighth goal of the season.
  • Slott found the equalizer when Stickelman's 29-yard shot ricocheted off the crossbar. Slott tracked down the loose ball and beat Kato to make it 2-2 in the 83rd minute.
  • The Terriers nearly went ahead with five minutes remaining. Slott's header off a corner kick was saved, then senior Morgan Fagan got past her marker for an eight-yard, 1-on-1 shot that Kato deflected away. Slott once again got a head on the ensuing corner kick, but it floated wide left.
  • In the 89th minute, Fagan had another chance for a shot, but sent the ball wide right.
STATS
  • BU sported a 17-7 advantage in shots, including 8-4 in shots on target.
  • Gianino paced all student-athletes with five shots, while Stickelman supplied three.
  • Corner kicks also favored BU at 9-1, with American's arriving in the 89th minute.
  • Each team was issued one yellow card.
  • Carr, Gianino, Tyburczy, and Hanlon all played the full 90 minutes in the match.
NOTES
  • Gianino has now set career-highs eight goals and 20 points this season, both of which lead the Terriers. She is the first Terrier in the Patriot League era to reach the 20-point threshold, and first to achieve the feat since Jessica Luscinski in 2011.
  • The junior is now tied with Kylie Strom '14 for 13th in program history with 45 career points.
  • Slott has scored twice in the Terriers' last three matches. All five of her career points have come against Patriot League opponents.
  • Tyburczy's assist was the second of her career, and second in three contests as well.
  • Stickelman picked up her second-career assist as well, and first since Oct. 1, 2023 against Navy.
  • With a 2-0-3 road record in Patriot League play, BU is unbeaten in conference road matches for the first time since 2021.
  • The Terriers' six draws this year matches the single-season program record from a year ago as well.
  • With the draw, combined with Colgate's loss to Army West Point later on the day, BU has secured a top-three seed in the Patriot League Tournament, and will host their first postseason match in either the quarterfinal or semifinal round.
  • The all-time series now favors the Terriers, 10-0-2.
UP NEXT
  • BU hosts Army West Point in the final regular season match on Wednesday (Oct. 30). Opening kick is slated for 6 p.m.
