Terriers Fall to Cornell, 2-1, in Regular-Season Finale

BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 contest to visiting Cornell on Sunday afternoon in the regular-season finale at New Balance Field. The Terriers honored seven team members for a Senior Day ceremony before they played their final home game.

Fifth-year senior Tess Csejka opened the scoring in the 11 minute before Cornell scored in the final minute of both the first and second quarters to take a 2-1 lead. The Terriers did not allow a shot nor a corner for the entirety of the second half but were unable to come up with an equalizer.

BU closes the regular season with a record of 6-10 while Cornell ends its season with a 7-9 mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Cornell controlled the play for the first 10 minutes, the Terriers came up with defensive stop off the first corner of the game and quickly turned that into the game's first goal.
  • Sophomore Maggie Driscoll ignited a quick restart off the play and got the ball up to junior Martu Coulo, who worked her way up the left side before sending the ball into the circle.
  • Cornell got a stick on the ball, which directed it towards the goal, where sophomore Olivia Hammer got a piece of it and set up a shot for Csejka, who put the ball off the pads of Cornell netminder Martha Broderick before immediately punching in the rebound at the 10:06 mark.
  • Just over four minutes later, BU goalkeeper Kate Thomason stopped a first try by Uma Käding off a centering pass from the right side but Käding quickly got another shot off that found the boards with just under a minute left in the quarter.
  • The Terriers successfully defended the only corner of the second quarter but the Big Red was able to get a lead before the half when Thomason made a terrific point-blank stop only to have Käding knock in the rebound by the left post with her back to the goal with just 59.7 seconds left.
  • BU was determined to create a tie as the second half got underway and prevented the Big Red from creating any scoring chances the rest of the game.
  • The Terriers had the final three corners of the game but were unable to capitalize on them.
  • Thomason was pulled in favor of an extra field player with under six minutes in regulation.
  • Late in the game the Terriers used some strong passing to create a circle penetration only to have the Big Red defense come up with a big stop and hold on for the win.
