BOSTON – The No. 21/24 Boston University softball program allowed just four combined hits in 10 innings across two games, and scored 23 combined runs to top Holy Cross in the first two Patriot League home games of the season on Saturday afternoon at the BU Softball Field.
The Terriers (34-4, 8-0 PL) executed a 10-run third inning in the first game, sending 14 batters to the plate in the frame en route to a 14-0 run-rule triumph in five innings. In the circle, graduate student
Allison Boaz tossed five innings of two-hit ball, punching out five Crusaders (8-23, 0-8 PL) for her 13th victory on the year.
In the second game, BU scored four runs in both the first and second innings on just three extra-base hits to power a 9-0 run-rule win in five innings. Sophomore
Kasey Ricard took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and finished the day with seven strikeouts.
GAME 1: BU – 14, Holy Cross – 0 (5 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After surrendering a one-out double in the top of the first, Boaz stranded Ali Sniegocki at third base after retiring Megan Yurchick and Anna Brait. Sniegocki was the only Crusader baserunner to reach third in the contest.
- In the bottom half of the inning, the Terriers plated three runs on freshman Kylie Doherty's fielder's choice and junior Kate Pryor's two-run single.
- BU capitalized on two Holy Cross errors as 11-straight batters reached base in the bottom of the third.
- Graduate student Caitlin Coker scored on an error from right fielder Ava Gambichler, then Boaz rocketed a three-run double down the left field line.
- Senior Kayla Roncin laced a two-run single up the middle to score Boaz and graduate student Audrey Sellers, then scored herself along with classmate Lauren Keleher on Coker's triple to left-center.
- Coker scored on a wild pitch, then after senior Lauren Nett's single, sophomore Brooke Deppiesse ripped a triple to the left field wall, making it 13-0.
- BU added its final run on Keleher's RBI triple to right-center, plating Sellers.
GAME 2: BU – 9, Holy Cross – 0 (5 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ricard started her outing with a sharp lineout from Jessica Mott, then struck out Sniegocki and Yurchick swinging.
- BU's first six batters of the game reached base, and the first five on hits. Keleher ignited the rally with a double, and scored on a two-run single from Avery.
- Deppiesse smacked an RBI single through the left side to plate Coker, and Avery raced home on Pryor's sacrifice fly.
- After two more strikeouts from Ricard in the second inning, Keleher was hit by a pitch, and Roncin singled to right field. Coker then skied an RBI double to left-center to make it 5-0.
- Avery sent an RBI double to left field, then Doherty hit her own sacrifice fly. Deppiesse launched an RBI double to right-center to score Avery, capping a four-run second inning for an 8-0 lead.
- Pryor's second sacrifice fly of the game made it 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth as senior pinch runner Raegan Kelly scored.
- Holy Cross' Callie Thibault registered the first hit off Ricard to lead off the fifth inning. The Crusaders had runners on the corners, but Ricard coaxed Morgan Jensen to pop out to third to seal the win.
