Patriot League Champion Terriers Draw NCAA Trip to Norman Regional
May 12, 2024 | Softball
BOSTON – After hoisting its sixth Patriot League trophy in nine years, the No. 21/22 nationally-ranked Boston University softball team will head south to the double elimination Norman Regional hosted by three-time defending national champion Oklahoma on May 17-19 as part of the NCAA tournament.
Seeded second, Pac-12 at-large representative (#24/RV) Oregon will face the three-seeded Terriers Friday afternoon with the ESPN+ broadcast set for 5:30 p.m. ET. The Big 12 champion and No. 2 national seeded (#2/2) Sooners will follow against Horizon League champion Cleveland State at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
BU will be visiting the Sooner State for the third time in six NCAA appearances under head coach Ashley Waters following a trip to Norman in 2018 and visit to Stillwater in 2021. A two-time NCAA regional finalist, the Terriers went a combined 0-4 in Oklahoma and will now try to duplicate the efforts of their 1996 (Storrs) and 2009 (Atlanta) squads. Last season, BU claimed its first ever NCAA run-rule victory against MEAC champ NC Central while going 0-2 against Virginia Tech with the University of Georgia serving as host.
In 2024, the 52-4-1 Terriers earned the automatic NCAA bid by becoming the first PL program since 2005 to go undefeated in both regular season (18-0) and conference tournament (3-0) action. Sitting at 49-6, Oklahoma went 3-0 in the Big 12 tournament by a combined score of 28-4 against Kansas, BYU and No. 1 Texas. Highlighted by series wins over then-No. 9 Washington and No. 15 California, Oregon went 13-10 in the Pac-12 and 28-19 overall to clinch an at-large bid. Cleveland State (22-24) went 15-10 in the Horizon League and 4-1 in the conference tournament to earn the automatic bid.
The Norman Regional victor will advance to the Super Regionals against the winner of the Tallahassee Regional hosted by No. 15 national seeded Florida State.
