June 11, 2024 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After tying the record for most wins by an NCAA Division I program located in the Northeast at 53 victories, the reigning Patriot League champion Boston University softball team claimed both its third straight Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award along with a No. 23 national ranking in the final top-25 poll, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
The Terriers went 53-6-1 (18-0 PL) during a historic 2024 campaign that saw the program end the year atop the NCAA statistical categories for both team ERA (1.41) and shutouts (29) while also ranking second with a .892 win-loss percentage. Overall, BU ranked in the top 50 in 13 different categories, including seven in the top 15 with the help of the nation's eighth-best fielding percentage (.979) and 15th-highest batting average (.321).
Head coach Ashley Waters, associate head coach Becca Carden and assistant coach Allie Brewster received the NFCA Northeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year honor for their efforts. Concluding their ninth season with the program, both Waters and Carden were the only ones to repeat from the previous year out of the 10 regions after Waters set both the program record for victories (272) and became the fastest PL coach to reach the 300-win milestone.
Ranked for most of the season by the NFCA, D1Softball and Softball America, BU became the first New England-based program since UMass in 2009 to end a season nationally-ranked in the final NFCA poll. The Terriers were also the first Northeast program since Hofstra in 2018 to place, as they topped the 1996 BU squad for the best finish in program history.
Following last season's 52-10 (17-1 PL) performance, BU is the first Northeast NCAA Division I program ever to to earn 50+ wins in back-to-back seasons.
