Terriers Edged in Double Overtime at Bucknell, 2-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Boston University field hockey team fell in double overtime, 2-1, at Bucknell on Friday afternoon in the Patriot League opener at Graham Field.
Senior Payton Anderson tied the game off a penalty stroke in the 20th minute for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The game remained 1-1 for the next 52 minutes of play before the Bison got the winner off the first corner of overtime.
BU moves to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in Patriot League play while the Bison improve to 3-4 on the year with a 1-0 conference mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bucknell scored on the first shot of the game as Lily Neilson went through the middle of the circle before knocking a shot past traffic and into the cage at the 9:39 mark.
- The Terriers earned the lone corner of the opening quarter but were unable to produce an equalizer.
- BU controlled play during the second quarter and was rewarded after earning a penalty stroke when a defender used her body to make a defensive save.
- Anderson successfully converted the stroke try at 19:55 to make it a 1-1 contest.
- The teams traded corner opportunities in the third quarter but neither was able to break the deadlock.
- Defense ruled the fourth quarter as the only shot attempt of the frame came in the way of a wide miss by the home team.
- The Terriers overcame a yellow card on junior Martu Coulo at the 56-minute mark that went into the first minute of overtime.
- Graduate student Kate Thomason came up with a point-blank save on a Bucknell shot in the 68th minute to send the game into double overtime.
- The only post-regulation corner went to Bucknell and Neilson provided the game-winner with a shot from the left side of the circle at the 72:21 mark.
GAME NOTES
- This was the 13th straight BU-Bucknell meeting that was decided by a single goal.
- Thomason's stop in the first overtime was the only goalkeeper save in the contest as Bucknell's lone stop was the defensive save that led to the penalty stroke.
- The Terriers held a 3-2 edge in corners while Bucknell owned a 9-7 shot advantage.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers will return to action next Saturday (Sept. 28) when they host Lehigh to close out the first half of their schedule.
- Game time at New Balance Field is set for 1 p.m.
