BOSTON – As part of the long-term strategy to transform the Boston University Softball Field, the Boston University Department of Athletics is excited to announce that Phase Three is underway with the changing of the grass surface to turf after a lead investment from Tim (MET'97) and Carrie Burr.
R.A.D. Sports will serve as general contractor to install a new Shaw Turf surface that will allow for better ball roll and reduced infill splash. Though the turf will extend to the bullpens, the natural infield dirt mix will remain. Phase Three will also include the creation of a natural grass viewing berm in center field for fans to utilize during games.
"The latest improvement of our facility is a testament to our incredible student-athletes, both past and present," said
Ashley Waters, the three-time reigning NFCA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year. "Their dedication to greatness has paved the way for future generations to experience these exciting changes. Drew Marrochello and our wonderful university community have supported the continued growth of our program, and for that, we are grateful. The opportunity to watch these improvements unfold has been a dream and vision of mine since I arrived on campus. I am so proud of what we have built and what we are going to continue to build on our home field."
Opened in 1988, the BU Softball Field originally featured an astroturf surface and was converted to a natural grass outfield/all-dirt infield in 2001. Besides helping with a smoother surface, proper drainage and weather-related cancellations, the new turf will give student-athletes the opportunity to practice outside more consistently and host more games.
A generous contribution from former Vice President Todd Klipp and his wife Anne Klipp led to the completion of Phase One in 2019 with the installation of a state-of-the-art Daktronics 13HD videoboard ranging 9.5 feet high and 27.5 feet wide. It features a virtual customizable stat bar that can include text, graphics, motion graphics and animations, creating an enhanced in-game experience for student-athletes and fans.
Completed last winter, Phase Two featured the installation of 1,000 linear feet of new fencing surrounding the entire field and bullpens. The addition of extra padding allowed for more branding opportunities and for the first time, a display of the program's All-Americans. Fans and alumnae were quick to notice a better viewing window behind home plate thanks to the replacement of the chain link backstop with tension netting system and padded backstop, supported by four 30' steel poles.
Phase Four will focus on the creation of an entrance way that is on par with the new updated field. The plan will also enhance fan amenities and seating. Opportunities to support the continued renovations still exist, as do chances to name spaces within the facility. Please contact director of athletics development Kyle Shawgo at (617) 353-1063 or

Since the renovations began, the Terriers have posted an impressive 72-6-1 (.918) home record to help claim four Patriot League regular season titles along with three conference tournament trophies.
