McCarthy Named Hockey East Defender of the Week

AMESBURY, Mass. — Junior captain Gavin McCarthy of the Boston University men's ice hockey team was named Hockey East Defender of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
McCarthy played an integral role on the defensive end in a series split with No. 12 Northeastern, blocking a conference-high eight shots over the two games and finishing the weekend with a +3 plus-minus, tied for best in the conference. On top of those numbers, McCarthy also notched two assists, including helping sophomore Cole Hutson score the game-winner in overtime on Saturday after kicking the puck out from a scrum on the boards to set up Hutson's breakaway.
This season, McCarthy has a +10 plus-minus (sixth in HE), 23 blocks (tied for sixth in HE) and six points off two goals and four assists. He was recently named to the U.S. Collegiate Selects roster for the upcoming Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland from Dec. 25-31.
The Terriers will next head to Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, for the 10th edition of Red Hot Hockey. BU and Cornell will face off at 8 p.m.
