Charlotte Outlasts Softball in Extra Innings, 10-9
March 12, 2025 | Softball
The Terriers (12-10) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead thanks to a pair of two-run homers, but the 49ers (14-12) would eventually prevail in the back-and-forth contest with the help of seven extra-base hits, including three homers. The two teams combined for 23 hits and five pitchers utilized.
Both sophomore Kylie Doherty and senior Sydney Pecoraro went yard to lead the BU offense. Doherty tied sophomore Libby Walsh and junior Brooke Deppiesse at two hits apiece with Deppiesse and Doherty also reaching home plate two times. In the circle, junior Kasey Ricard recorded four strikeouts in seven innings of work against 12 hits allowed, and classmate Haley Ganino (0-2) earned two outs in the bottom of the eighth in relief before Charlotte drew a walk and hit a walk-off RBI double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Megan Coyle started off with a two-out walk in the top of the first and scored on Pecoraro's second-career homer for a 2-0 lead.
- The Terriers doubled the lead in the second with sophomore Livia Christopher singling through the left side on a two-out pitch and then reaching home on Doherty's blast to center.
- Charlotte responded in the bottom half with a solo homer and clutch pitching in the third, as BU stranded the bases loaded due to the inability to get the ball out of the infield.
- The 49ers grabbed the lead during their next turn at the plate with four runs off five hits, including three consecutive doubles.
- BU though came right back in the top of the fourth with Doherty hitting a lead-off single and scoring on Deppiesse's RBI triple to right that helped set up Coyle's RBI grounder.
- Walsh extended the lead to 7-5 in the fifth by doubling down the left field line and scoring on a fielding error.
- After the 49ers hit a solo homer, the Terriers scored a pair of runs in the sixth off freshman Addie Lucier's RBI sac fly and Walsh's RBI double.
- Charlotte loaded the bases in the bottom half on two walks and a hit-by-pitch, but Ricard got out of the jam with a strikeout.
- The 49ers though remained on the attack and rallied to tie the game in the seventh with three runs off four hits, including a lead-off solo homer, and an errant throw.
- After BU stranded a runner in the top of the eighth, Ganino started off in relief earning a ground out and fly out, but the 49ers managed to walk off with the victory on a RBI double.
- BU will have the weekend off and then open the home schedule on Tuesday (March 18) with a doubleheader against Yale starting at 1 p.m.
- Last season, the Terriers swept the Bulldogs in a doubleheader, 7-1 and 7-0.
