March 7, 2025 | Softball
ROCK HILL, S.C. – After posting a season-high 14 hits during a 13-1 run-rule victory over Presbyterian, the Boston University softball team dropped a 3-1 pitcher's duel to Western Carolina for the doubleheader split Friday afternoon at the Winthrop Eagle Classic.
The Terriers (9-8) totaled seven extra-base hits in their first ever meeting with the Blue Hose (10-10) and added two more in the second game, but the Catamounts (9-10) delivered a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.
Junior Brooke Deppiesse led the offense with a combined four hits in six at-bats with a single, double, triple and homer for the cycle alongside three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Kylie Doherty also had four hits, including a pair of doubles, with three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Addie Lucier showed off her speed in the first game with a triple and inside-the-park home to total four RBIs with three runs scored.
In the circle, junior Kasey Ricard (5-6) tallied eight strikeouts against a solo homer over four innings for the game one win and then pitched the final three innings with three strikeouts against the WCU's game-clinching two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

GAME 1: BU 13, Presbyterian 1 (5 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Camryn Lyons started BU off with a one-out double and shortly thereafter scored on Doherty's two-out, two-RBI single to right alongside Deppiesse, who had a walk and stole base.
- In the top of the second after Ricard struck out the side to end the first, sophomore Libby Walsh led off with a walk and scored on Lucier's RBI triple to left center that helped set up freshman Camryn Lyon's RBI single up the middle for the 4-0 lead.
- The Terriers pulled away in the third with seven runs off eight hits, including two Doherty doubles, Lucier's three-run inside-the-park homer and Deppiesse's RBI triple.
- The Blue Hose broke up Ricard's shutout bid with a two-out solo homer but wouldn't cut the deficit any further, as Lucier scored on an error and Deppiesse earned an infield RBI single.
- Making her first appearance in the circle in two years, junior Haley Ganino earned a line out, ground out and lastly a swinging strikeout to seal the 13-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Starting the contest in the circle, freshman Ava Johnson gave up a lead-off single and also committed an error with one out but kept the game scoreless on a strikeout and fly out to right.
- The Catamounts continued to apply pressure in the second with back-to-back one-out singles before Johnson earned a fly out and strikeout.
- WCU struck first with a two-out solo homer in the third, but Deppiesse responded with a two-out blast of her own during the top of the fourth to tie the game.
- Ricard entered the circle in relief and retired the side in the bottom of the fourth but ran into trouble in the fifth with a one-out double.
- She responded with two ground outs but ran into trouble again in the sixth by allowing a one-out double and what proved to be the decisive two-run homer.
- Deppiesse recorded a two-out double in the top of the sixth and freshman Biz Baglieri led off the seventh with a single, but the Terriers were unable to advance the runners in the loss to 2024 NFCA All-Region pitcher Tessa Juett.
- Lucier became the seventh Terrier to hit a triple this season and the third to record a home run, while Deppiesse joined Doherty as the lone Terriers to go yard multiple times so far.
- Ricard's eight strikeouts in four innings against Presbyterian matched her season high earned in a 3-0 win over Boston College.
- Ricard made her first career appearance at the plate as a pinch-hitter in the first game and lined out to right.
- Senior Sydney Pecoraro made her season debut as a pinch hitter in the first game as well, earning a single and run scored.
- Junior Olivia DeLong is now 2-for-4 this season as a pinch hitter after going 0-of-2 in 2024.
- WCU improved to 3-0 all-time in the series after winning two contests on a neutral field in 2016.
- BU will face WCU a second time Saturday at 3 p.m. followed by a 5:30 p.m. first pitch against tournament host Winthrop.
