Nell Pitches Gem as Doherty Homers Late to Lift Softball to 2-0 Win Over Harvard

BOSTON – Highlighted by freshman Danika Nell's pitching gem and sophomore Kylie Doherty's two-run homer, the Boston University softball team concluded the homestand with a 2-0 victory over Harvard Tuesday afternoon.
Nell (5-1) totaled seven strikeouts without allowing a walk in her three-hit shutout to help the Terriers (30-15) reach 30 victories for a program-best seventh straight season, as the Crimson dropped to 20-11. Freshman Addie Lucier had the lead-off walk in the sixth that helped set up Doherty's 11th homer of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nell recorded at least one strikeout in each of the first six innings to help keep the Crimson off the scoreboard.
- Harvard earned a single in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings but were prevented from advancing the runners.
- After the teams combined for 15 consecutive outs to start the game, sophomore Kyomi Apalit singled through the right side in the bottom of the third.
- Sophomore Livia Christopher followed with a sac bunt to advance Apalit to second, but the Terriers grounded out twice to end the inning.
- BU was also unable to break the deadlock in the fifth after sophomore Sophie Naivar earned a lead-off walk with three consecutive ground outs against Nicolette Hunter.
- Doherty grabbed the lead for good by launching reliever Olivia Torres' 2-1 pitch toward right field in the bottom of the sixth.
- Trying to rally, Harvard earned a one-out single, but Nell sealed the victory on a fly out and line out.
- Currently tied atop the Patriot League standings alongside tiebreaker owner Army, the Terriers will hit the road for the final time this regular season for a PL weekend series at Lehigh on Saturday (April 26) and Sunday (April 27). First pitch is set for 12 p.m. both days.
- BU went 4-0 last season with all games taking place at home and being decided by a combined five runs, including an 1-0 (8) win for the PL championship.
- In 2023 at Lehigh, the Terriers went 2-1 with two wins by a combined score of 14-3 and a 3-2 loss.
