Softball Splits Doubleheader at Lehigh
April 26, 2025 | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After opening the Patriot League road series with a 5-3 victory, the Boston University softball team came up just inches short in the second contest, 3-2, for a doubleheader split at Lehigh Saturday afternoon.
Both senior Tyesha Williams and junior Brooke Deppiesse recorded at least one RBI in both contests, as the Terriers moved to 31-16 and 11-3 in conference play. Junior Kasey Ricard (21-10) went the distance in the first game with six strikeouts against one earned run for the victory but was unable to add her first save of the season when the Mountain Hawks (24-22, 12-5 PL) managed to hit a sixth-inning go-ahead homer that touched the top of the leaping freshman Camryn Lyons' glove.

GAME 1: BU - 5, Lehigh - 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Hawks had the game's first quality look at getting on the scoreboard with a one-out walk and two-out single, but Ricard ended the threat on her fourth strikeout.
- Junior Megan Coyle gave the Terriers the lead for good by leading off the fourth with a walk, taking second on freshman Kieren McHugh's sac bunt, reaching third on Lyons' single and scoring on Williams' RBI sac fly.
- Lehigh tried to respond in the bottom half with two singles and a walk to load the bases, but Ricard earned a swinging strikeout for the second out.
- The second baseman, sophomore Libby Walsh, then made a stellar diving stop on a hard grounder that led to her, while laid out on the ground, tossing the ball from her glove to Deppiesse covering the bag for the force out.
- The Terriers then scored three runs off three hits and an error, including Deppiesse's RBI single and Coyle's two-RBI single.
- Lehigh quickly struck back, taking advantage of two BU throwing miscues with a two-RBI double to cut the lead to 4-3.
- Sophomore Kylie Doherty scored an insurance run in the seventh by hitting a one-out double to left, taking third on a wild pitch and scoring on Deppiesse's RBI sac fly.
- The Mountain Hawks earned a two-out single before grounding out to Deppiesse at short to end the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU tried to get on the scoreboard in the first inning with both Doherty and Coyle getting on base via singles, but Chloe Hess (10-8) kept the game scoreless on a strikeout and fly out to left.
- The Mountain Hawks threatened freshman Danika Nell with back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the second, but she earned back-to-back strikeouts after a failed sac bunt attempt.
- After hitting a single in each of the next two innings, the Terriers jumped on the scoreboard in the fifth when Walsh singled to third to lead off, beat the throw at second to put two on and then scored on Deppiesse's RBI single to right.
- Hess loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch with zero outs but helped turn a 1-2-3 double play before Williams delivered an RBI single for a 2-0 advantage.
- With one out in the bottom half, Kelly Fricker homered to right off Nell, who was then replaced by Ricard.
- Ricard earned two strikeouts to keep the lead entering the sixth but after a one-out single, gave up a two-run homer that just had a couple of extra inches to tip off Lyons' glove for a 3-2 lead.
- BU tried to rally with a two-out single in the seventh but Hess earned a fortuitous called strike on a pitch above the belt with a 3-0 count to earn a game-ending ground out.
- Teams will face off one more time on Sunday (April 27) at 12 p.m.
- The contest marks the final PL game of the regular season for Lehigh.
