Terrier Twelve - #4: Softball Overcomes Inexperience to Reach Third Straight NCAA Tournament

August 4, 2025

Returning for a 17th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Monday and Wednesday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.

Coming in at number four in this year's Terrier Twelve is softball, which overcame the graduation of half the roster to three-peat as Patriot League tournament champions.

Only returning three regular starters from a historic 53-6-1 campaign, the Terriers began the 2025 season on a high note this past February, tossing four straight shutouts to open a season for the first time. Three months later, junior and two-time PL Pitcher of the Year Kasey Ricard (26-12, 2.16 ERA) added two more to help BU start a conference tournament with a pair of shutouts for the first time in three decades.

As the lone returning experienced pitcher following the graduation of multi-All-Region award recipients Allison Boaz and Lizzy Avery, Ricard set a program record with the NCAA's third most innings pitched of the season at 243.1 total. She finished in the top 40 nationally in 11 different NCAA statistical categories to lead the way, placing sixth in victories (26), 12th in strikeouts (233) and 13th in solo shutouts (6).

At the start of the PL championship win at top-seeded Army West Point though, Ricard ran into trouble with the Black Knights leading off on a single and two-run homer. After missing all of March due to injury, freshman Danika Nell (8-1, 2.88 ERA) entered in relief and pitched seven scoreless innings to help the Terriers rally late for the 3-2 victory. Nell finished with four solo shutouts out of 11 starts, while classmate Ava Johnson (4-3, 3.21 ERA) totaled three of her own out of eight starts.

At the plate, the lone returning starters, junior Brooke Deppiesse and sophomore Kylie Doherty, had their best seasons yet to help BU avoid a rebuilding year following the graduation of three PL Player of the Year honorees in Kayla Roncin (2x), Caitlin Coker and Lauren Keleher. Tabbed both PL Defensive Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, Deppiesse batted a personal-best .421 with 57 runs scored (No. 2 most all-time at BU), 17 doubles (No. 3), six triples, five homers and 23 walks for an impressive .495 on-base percentage. Recipient of her first career All-PL First Team and All-Region awards, Doherty (.338 avg.) delivered the second-most homers in program history with 13 total alongside 55 runs scored (No. 4 most at BU) and 46 RBIs.

Two transfers in Lafayette's Megan Coyle and Arizona State's Libby Walsh played key roles as well offensively. Coyle (.302 avg.) posted BU's fourth-most RBIs ever with 51 total with the help of 11 doubles and four homers, while Walsh (.348 avg.) reached home plate 35 times, thanks in part to 20 walks and .442 on-base percentage. Seeing their first considerable action as sophomores, Sophie Naivar went yard for the lone run of a 1-0 win over Lehigh in the tournament opener, and Kyomi Apalit followed up in the next contest by launching a two-run blast against Army to reach the PL championship round.

Seniors Sydney Pecoraro and Tyesha Williams both finished above .300 with a combined 42 hits, while junior Olivia DeLong (.342 avg.) had 13 of her own after making just two plate appearances a year prior. The freshman class also made an impact, as Camryn Lyons (.309) totaled 17 RBIs and 17 walks for a .413 on-base percentage. Addie Lucier added 19 RBIs, while Kieren McHugh recorded 12 of her own.

Setting a new program record with four consecutive 39+ win seasons, BU ended the year ranked in the top 100 in 19 different NCAA categories, including fifth in triples (22), eighth in shutouts (16), 20th in ERA (2.63), 47th in hits (469) and 57th in RBIs (294).
