Buffalo Outlasts Softball in Seven-Inning Marathon, 20-16

With the score tied at 11-11 entering the sixth, the Bulls (2-1) tallied five runs and added four more in the seventh to create just enough separation against the Terriers (3-2). Of the 10 combined pitchers who entered the circle, Buffalo's Melena Toth was the only one not credited with at least one run scored, as she faced two batters with the last one grounding out to end the game.
Freshman Irys Kline led the Terrier offense with a pair of doubles and triple for three RBIs and two runs scored, while junior Kylie Doherty and sophomore Camryn Lyons batted a combined 6-for-10 with five RBIs and five runs scored. Senior Megan Coyle also had two RBIs batting 2-for-4 with a run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulls opened the game with back-to-back singles and loaded the bases on a one-out hit-by-pitch before adding an RBI sac fly and RBI single for 2-0 lead against senior Kasey Ricard (3-1).
- Classmate Haley Ganino entered the game and ended further damage with a ground out to second.
- After freshman Irys Kline tripled to right and scored on a wild pitch, both juniors Sophie Naivar (BB) and Kylie Doherty (2B) reached base and scored on sophomore Camryn Lyons' two-RBI single for a 3-2 lead.
- In the top of the second, Buffalo combined for three runs off three hits and a pair of walks against Ganino and sophomore Ava Johnson before sophomore Danika Nell earned a strikeout to strand two Bulls on base.
- After Nell retired the side in the top of the third, BU pull ahead with four runs off three hits, highlighted by Kline's two-RBI double for 7-5 lead.
- Buffalo though came right back with six runs off seven hits against Nell and the returning Ricard.
- Freshman Mary Catherine Stanley delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom half and Ricard earned a strikeout in the top of the fifth to keep the deficit at 11-8.
- BU tied the game with three runs off four hits and two errors with senior Megan Coyle blasting a two-RBI double to left center.
- The Bulls came back on the attack in the sixth, first earning a pair of singles and a two-RBI double to grab the lead for good.
- Buffalo added three more runs off RBI hits against Ricard and responded to Doherty's RBI sac fly in the bottom of the sixth with four runs off four hits against senior Olivia DeLong and Coyle.
- Facing a 20-12 deficit with three outs left, BU tried to pull off another rally by loading the bases on a single and two walks with two outs.
- Sophomore Kieren McHugh followed Kline's RBI walk with a two-RBI double but ended up stranded at third after Doherty delivered an RBI single up the middle.
- The Terriers will next compete at three-day Carolina Classic on Feb. 13-15, playing twice against both Louisville and host South Carolina with a single matchup against Kennesaw State.
- BU will first meet Louisville on Friday at 11 a.m. and then the Gamecocks at 4 p.m.
