BOSTON - In a rain-soaked contest at New Balance Field, the Boston University field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 overtime contest to Maine on Sunday afternoon.

BU rallied from a 2-0 deficit with goals from senior Alex Purcell and sophomore Rachel Turer to send the game into overtime before the Black Bears capitalized on a corner in the 70th minute to leave Boston with a victory.

The Terriers move to 2-4 on the season while Maine improves to 3-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

BU controlled play for the first 25 minutes of the contest but was unable to strike first.
Maine used its first corner of the day - and first shot - to go up 1-0 in the 28th minute.
Martha Barratt scored from the top of the circle off assists from Emily Chisholm and Taylor Stanford at the 27:45 mark.
After taking the 1-0 lead into the break, the Black Bears doubled the advantage at 37:50 when a pass from Floor Dijkhuizen found Gabrielle Sousa for a redirect at the right post.
The Terriers earned four corners in the third quarter while allowing nine and scored on two of them to draw even.
Purcell took a pass from graduate student Maddie Hudson and created space at the top of the circle for a reverse-stick drive that found the boards at 41:08.
Less than two minutes later, Turer collected a loose ball after an initial BU corner shot and flicked the ball inside the right post to make it a 2-2 affair at 42:57.
Both teams had corner opportunities late in regulation but were unable to capitalize.
Maine put on some pressure in the early stages of overtime before the Terriers regrouped after a green card and created a corner opportunity that produced a strong shot on goal that was stopped.
Off a Maine corner in the 70th minute, Eloise Penty inserted the ball and then sent in an elevated shot off a pass from Barratt to end the contest.

GAME NOTES

BU outshot Maine 15-9 and held an 8-4 advantage in corners.
Senior Sophie Ortyl made one save in the first half before sophomore Anna Wilson came on at the half and finished with two saves.
Annabel Halkes had a nine-save performance for the Black Bears.
Purcell already has nine points (3g, 3a) this season after entering the year with four points in her BU career.
