Women's Soccer Blanks Vermont To Maintain First Place
October 22, 2000 | Women's Soccer
The women's soccer team maintained its hold on first place in the America East standings with a 3-0 win over host University of Vermont on Sunday (October 22nd).
Senior Deidre Enos (Milton) scored two goals to lead the attack, while freshman Katie Chen (Hamilton) scored her first collegiate goal. In the meantime, junior Danielle Demers (Portland, Me) had four saves in posting her second straight shutout and sixth of the season.
The win improved the team's overall record to 11-6-0 and 7-0-0 in America East and closed out an incredible weekend for the Terriers.
On Oct. 20, they shut out Hartford by the identical 3-0 score. Not only was it the first time B.U. had ever beaten Hartford in women's soccer, it also ended Hartford's 39-game winning streak over Conference foes.
Sunday's win marked the fifth time this year that Enos has scored two goals in a game. She now has 15 for the season, just one short of the single-season record she set last year, while she continues to build on her own career goal-scoring record. Last year's America East Player of the Year, Enos now has 46 goals for her career.
Enos staked the Terriers to a 1-0 lead against Vermont when she beat Catamount goalkeeper Brooke Fairbanks in a one-on-one situation in the 10th minute of the game. Junior Teresa Petruccelli (Flushing, NY) earned the assist.
Vermont threatened to tie the game before the intermission, but a shot by Kelly Herrero from 18 yards out just sailed over the cross bar, and the score remained 1-0 after the first 45 minutes of action.
The Terriers added two more goals in the second half. Enos netted her second goal of the game in the 77th minute, finishing a feed from freshman Katie Smurthwaite (West Hartford, CT).
Chen then closed out the scoring with her tally in the final 11 seconds of the game with the assist going to freshman Carrie Schmidt (Milwaukee, WI).
B.U. dominated play, outshooting the Catamounts, 24-8, and holding the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.
Demers, who improved her season record to 7-3-0, had four saves.
