Dorman, Garvey Named League Rookies of the Week
October 24, 2000 | Women's Soccer
Andy Dorman (Flintshire, Wales, UK) and Lesley Garvey, who helped spearhead their Terrier soccer teams to wins over Hartford and Vermont last weekend, have been named the America East Men's and Women's Soccer Rookies of the Week, respectively.
For Dorman, this marks the second time this year he has received the award. He was similarly honored after scoring three goals in the Terriers' 5-1 win over the University of Maine on October 8th.
For Garvey, this is the first time she has been recognized for her play
Last weekend, Dorman scored the Terriers' only goal in the 1-0 win over Hartford on Oct. 20 and then had a team-leading 10 shots in the 1-0 win over Vermont on Oct. 22. His goal against Hartford brought his season total to five, while he also has two assists for 12 points. In both cases, he trails only senior Kirk Miller (Minnetonka, MN), who has 9-119.
"Andy has established himself as one of the most stylish attacking players in the conference," said head coach Neil Roberts. "He has really stepped up the last five or six games and has been running the offense from his spot at center midfield."
"It is unusual for a freshman to be able to play this position, Roberts went on. There is no telling how good Andy can be. He has a tremendous amount of potential."
The shutouts of Hartford and Vermont improved the team's overall record to 7-6-2, while it is 3-3-1 in the league and still has hopes of advancing to the league's post-season tournament. Going into the upcoming final weekend of the regular-season, the Terriers are in sixth place with 10 points. Drexel is just ahead of B.U. with 12 points, while Hofstra holds down fourth place with 13 points. Only the top four teams in the league advance to the playoffs.
The women also posted two shutouts last weekend.
On Friday (October 20th), they posted the biggest win in the program's history, and maybe the biggest conference win by any team, when they shut out the University of Hartford, 3-0.
Hartford, which was ranked number nine in the country entering the weekend, had won 38 straight games against conference foes prior to the loss to the Terriers.
Then, on Sunday, B.U. blanked the University of Vermont by the identical 3-0 score.
While Garvey did not figure in any of the scoring, her outstanding play at back limited the number of quality chances by both Hartford and Vermont.
"Lesley has been fabulous all year," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman. "In fact, I think she is one of the best defensive players in the league."
"I was concerned entering this season because we lost Stephanie Stabers through graduation," said Feldman. "Stephanie had started four years for us, and I wasn't sure what we were going to do. But, with Lesley in there, we haven't missed a beat."
"She is confident. She has great intuition. And, she is very subtle, said Feldman."
With the two wins, the Terriers improved their overall record to 11-6-0, while they are 7-0-0 in the league. Their 21 points tie them for first place with Hartford. However, the Hawks have played one more game than the Terriers.
This weekend, B.U. hosts Delaware on Oct. 27 and Towson on Oct. 29. A win over either team will guarantee the Terriers the America East regular-season title and the number one seed in the post-season tournament.
