Women's Soccer Blanks Delaware To Win America East Title
October 27, 2000 | Women's Soccer
Senior forward Deidre Enos (Milton) scored a pair of goals, including her school record 17th of the season and junior goalie Danielle Demers (Portland, ME) posted her third straight shutout to lead the Terrier women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over the University of Delaware on Oct. 27.
With the win, the Terriers wrapped up their first-ever America East regular-season title. With still a game to play against Towson University on Oct. 29, the Terriers improved their league record to 8-0-0 while they are 12-6-0 overall.
The eight wins tie a school record for most league victories, while the 12 total wins is the fourth highest single-season total in school history. A year ago, the Terriers finished with an 8-1-0 record in America East play, while the 1996 team holds the record for most total wins in a season-14. The 1997 and 1999 teams have the second-highest single-season win total-13.
After a rather lackluster first half against Delaware in which neither team scored and each team had seven shots, the Terriers came out in the second half to outshoot the Blue Hens, 18-4, and outscore them, 3-0.
Enos scored what proved to be the only goal the Terriers would need in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Suzanne Hudak (Harleysville, PA) started the play when she centered the ball to sophomore Allison Merkle (Baltimore, MD). Merkle then headed the ball into Enos who fired the ball to the upper left corner of the goal from about seven yards out.
Enos set up the second goal in the 68th minute when she took a shot that Delaware goalie Rachel Bersin saved. However, she left the rebound out front where Terrier junior Nicole Soules (Springfield, VA) knocked it in to stake the Terriers to a 2-0 lead.
Enos closed out the scoring in the 74th minute when she took a lead pass from Hudak and put the ball past Bersin into the left side of the goal.
It marked the sixth time this year she has scored at least two goals in a game, while her five total points marked a season-best.
In addition, the two goals brought her season total to a school-record 17, eclipsing the previous mark of 16, which she set last year. In addition to the two goals, she added an assist to bring her point total to 36 for the season, just one shy of the record. She also has a school-record 114 points for her career.
Demers, who improved her season record to 8-3-0, had four saves in posting her third straight shutout, and, ironically, all three have been by the identical 3-0 score. For the season, Demers has seven shutouts, tying her for fifth place in the Terrier record books.
With her performance, Demers lowered his goals against average this season to 0.78 while her goals against average is .845.
The last goal she gave up was at the 72:21 mark of the Harvard game on October 18th. Since then, she has played 288 minutes and 39 seconds without giving up a goal.
