Women's Soccer Advances To Conference Title Game
November 4, 2000 | Women's Soccer
Senior Deidre Enos (Milton) continued to build on her single-season and career scoring records on Friday (November 3rd) as her 18th goal of the season and 49th of her career lifted the Terrier women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Towson in the semifinals of the America East Tournament, hosted by the University of Hartford.
The win sends the top-seeded Terriers into Sunday's (November 5th) title game against second-seeded Hartford, a 1-0 winner over Hofstra in the other semifinal match. The game will be played at noon at Hartford's Al-Marzook Field.
This will be a rematch of last year's title game that Hartford won, 2-1.
It will also mark the second time this year that B.U. and Hartford will be meeting. In that matchup, the Terriers prevailed, 3-0, ending Hartford's 39-game winning streak over America East conference teams.
In the victory over the Hawks, sophomore Suzanne Hudak (Harleysville, Pa), freshman Rebecca Beyer (Shawnee, KS), and Enos each scored a goal, while junior goalkeeper Danielle Demers (Portland, ME) had four saves. That game was also played on the University of Hartford field.
In Friday's win over Towson, Enos, this year's America East Player of the Year, broke a 1-1 tie with 8:40 remaining to provide the winning margin. It marked her eighth game-winning goal of the season, and it improved the Terriers' overall record to 14-6-0. It was also their 10th straight Conference win.
Beyer earned the assist on the game-winner, as her pass to Enos threaded two Towson defenders and sent Enos in alone. She beat Tiger goalie Tina Steck with a low shot to the keeper's right.
After a scoreless first half, Terrier junior Nicole Soules (Springfield, VA) opened the scoring when she dribbled through the Towson defense and fired a low shot by Steck just inside the left post. The unassisted goal came at 55:02.
The score remained 1-0 for the next 24 minutes.
Then, at the 79:09 mark, Towson, which ended its season with a 10-8-1 record, tied the game when Holly Noga broke through two Terrier defenders and beat Demers with a low shot to the left post.
It marked the first goal Demers had allowed to a conference team this year. In her seven previous outings, she had not allowed a goal and had made 27 saves.
It also ended a streak of 457 minutes and 38 seconds in which Demers had not allowed a goal. Harvard scored the last goal against her on October 18th. Since then, she had shut out Hartford, Vermont, Delaware, and Towson. The shutout of Towson came on October 29th in the Terriers' regular-season finale.
Noga's goal in Friday's semifinal match was just the second goal the Terriers allowed in 10 conference games this year. Drexel scored the only other goal in a 2-1 Terrier win on September 24th.
In the meantime, B.U. has scored 26 goals in the 10 league games this year.
A little more than two minutes after Noga's goal, Enos scored the goal that kept the Terriers' season going for at least one more game.
