Women's Soccer Bows To Pacific In Season Opener
September 2, 2000 | Women's Soccer
The Terrier women's soccer team opened its season on a disappointing note on Friday (September 1st), bowing, 1-0, to host College of Pacific in Stockton, CA.
Senior Brooke Kentera scored the only goal 17 minutes into the game and sophomore Megan Pickering made it stand up the rest of the way. Pickering, who was last week's Big West Player of the Week, stopped nine shots in the Pacific goal. She has now allowed just one goal in three games, as the Tigers improved their record to 3-0.
"She is certainly the best player on their team," Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman said after the game in referring to Pickering.
B.U. put tremendous pressure on Pacific, particularly in the second half, but a header by sophomore Allison Merkle went over the crossbar, while senior Deidre Enos was denied a couple of times.
In the meantime, B.U. junior goalkeeper Danielle Demers, who had 10 saves for the game, made a couple of sparkling stops in the second half to keep Pacific to just the single goal.
"I was very pleased with how Danielle played," said Feldman. "(Junior) Megan Cross also played very well, and I was very happy with how two of our freshmen-Lesley Garvey and Katie Smurthwaite played.
"Actually, I was very happy with how we performed as a team," the coach went on. "We gave up the goal early in the game, but we were all confident we could score. We made some adjustments at halftime and really put pressure on them in the second half.
"I just don't think we were quite aggressive enough in the box," said the coach. "We had seven corner kicks, and with the exception of Merkle's header that went over the cross bar, we didn't get off enough good shots from the box.
"I am not discouraged because I know that our prospects are bright, and that we are going to score goals this year.
"It is just disappointing we couldn't score a goal today," said the coach. "I really like our team and like the spirit we showed today."
The Terriers will try to rebound on Sunday (September 3rd) when they travel to Moraga, CA to play St. Mary's before returning to Boston.
"St. Mary's also lost to Pacific earlier this year," said Feldman. "They (St. Mary's) are more physical than Pacific, and we will have our work cut out for ourselves."
