Women's Soccer Blanks New Hampshire, 3-0
September 28, 2000 | Women's Soccer
Deidre Enos, Mary-Beth Magner, and Teresa Petruccelli each scored a goal and Danielle Demers notched her third shutout of the season as the host Terrier women's soccer team blanked New Hampshire, 3-0, in America East action on Thursday night (September 28th).
The win was noteworthy on two accounts. First, it put the Terriers over the .500 mark for the first time this season, as they are now 5-4-0. More importantly, it kept B.U. undefeated in league play, as its record is 3-0-0.
Enos scored the only goal the Terriers would need at 15:39 when she collected a loose ball from about 20 yards out and put her shot over the head of UNH goalkeeper Stephanie Springer's head.
It was the ninth goal of the season and 40th of Enos' career.
It also marked the fourth straight goal that Enos has scored for the Terriers. The streak began on September 22nd when she scored the Terriers' lone goal in a 1-0 win over Hofstra. Then, two days later, she accounted for B.U.'s two goals in a 2-1 win over Drexel.
Mary-Beth Magner ended the Enos streak when she staked the Terriers to a 2-0 lead at 25:36 as she notched her first goal of the season and 15th of her career on a rebound. The score remained 2-0 until Petruccelli closed out the scoring for the game with her second goal of the season at 57:43.
"I was really glad someone else scored," smiled Enos after the game. "We've been getting very good scoring chances so it's nice to see others score. It should give everyone a lot more confidence."
Enos pointed to two factors that have accounted for her goal-scoring exploits this season.
"People are feeding me some nice balls and I am just finishing it off," she said. "I am also feeling very confident and composed in front of the net."
Head coach Nancy Feldman was very pleased with how her team played against New Hampshire. "We started strong and stayed strong through most of the game," said the coach. "We had a couple of lulls along the way but that's because we played a lot of players. "But, I thought we thoroughly dominated play."
The Terriers outshot the Wildcats, 38-7, marking the second straight game in which B.U. held an incredible one-sided edge in shots. Last Sunday (September 24th) at Drexel, B.U. outshot the Dragons, 37-2. "We have told our players to be more aggressive around the net," said the coach. "If you shoot on net, something good will happen, and that's what is happening.
"I was also happy to see the shutout tonight," the coach went on. "We struggled defensively the first six games, and now we are really cleaning up our defense in front of our net."
