The Terrier women's soccer team, hoping to come away with a win and three points in the Conference standings, instead had to settle for a 0-0 double overtime tie against Northeastern in an America East battle at Nickerson Field on Thursday night.
The Terriers entered the game in fifth place in the league with six points, two better than Northeastern, which was in sixth place. With the tie, the Terriers' overall record is 5-9-2 while they are 2-2-1 in the league for seven points. Northeastern is now 5-7-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the league for five points.
"I am very disappointed we didn't come away with three points tonight," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman, who has never lost to Northeastern. Her record against the Huskies is 6-0-1. "We are a better team than they are. If we had played great for 90 minutes, it would have been one thing. But, we didn't play a full 90 minutes.
"We came out sluggish in the first half," continued Feldman. "We needed more urgency. It is the responsibility of the starters to get us off the mark, and they didn't. That's why I made so many substitutes in the first half. We wasted time tonight."
During the first half, the Terriers outshot the Huskies by only a 4-3 margin, and they really didn't have any quality chances.
"I told the players at halftime that they needed to move quicker and attack better," said Feldman. "And, they did that."
The statistics back up the coach, as B.U. outshot Northeastern, 9-4 after intermission. The Terriers had a couple of good scoring chances, the first by Susan Marschall and the second by Rebecca Beyer, but neither could connect.
The Terriers also had a couple of excellent chances in the overtime periods. Suzanne Hudak fired a ball from about 20 yards out that sailed over the crossbar in the first overtime. Beyer also had a golden chance in the second overtime, but her shot from about 15 yards our hit the crossbar.
"We still have three conference games ahead of us," said Feldman, whose team travels to Vermont on Saturday and to Hartford on Halloween day before it closes out the regular season at home November 3rd against Albany. "So, we are certainly not panicking, but I am very disappointed about tonight's outcome."
