Chen Leads Terriers To Season-Opening Win Over Creighton
August 30, 2002 | Women's Soccer

Junior Katie Chen (Hamilton) scored her first goal in almost two years on Friday night to lead the Terrier women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over host Creighton in the season opener for both teams.
Chen, whose last collegiate goal came against Vermont on October 22, 2000, scored in the 75th minute on a nifty pass from junior back Emily Dionne (Rockland). Dionne slipped the ball through Creighton's defenders to Chen who took the ball and placed into the right side of the net past Creighton goalkeeper Jaimie Thompson.
B.U. junior goalkeeper Jessica Clinton (Valley Stream, NY) made the goal stand up as she turned aside four shots. It brought Clinton's career shutout total to 11.6, which ranks second on the Terriers' all-time list behind Meghan Lynch's 19.9.
"This was a great win for us," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman, who notched her 91st win in her seven-plus-year career at B.U. "It was not pretty, but we fought hard, and I was proud of how focused the team was throughout the match.
"The fans were very vocal, and it was a real test for us," the coach went on. "So, it was great to see how we were able to put it all aside and come together as a team.
"It was a great opener for us and a perfect way to start the season," continued Feldman. "It was also very important for us to win a game outside our region."
The coach then turned her attention to the game-winning goal.
"Emily gave Katie a great service," said the coach. "Emily could see the defense was coming up and that Katie was making a move to try to get past the defense. So, she put the ball over the defense. Katie took the ball and did not make a mistake. She got to the top of the box, and, as the goalkeeper was coming out to cut down the angle, she put the ball right over the keeper's head. She showed great composure.
"It was great to see Katie step up and use the technique that she has learned since she has been here," said the coach. "She came to B.U. as an excellent athlete and she has worked very hard over the last couple of years on her soccer technique."
Feldman was also very happy with the play in back of Dionne and junior Lesley Garvey (Hopewell Junction, NY) saying, "they played their guts out."
The Terriers close out their trip to the Midwest on Sunday afternoon when they play at Kansas.
"This will be a great test for us," said Feldman. "They are ranked sixth in their region, just as we are in our region. It will give us an idea of where we are as a program. We will need to rise to the occasion."
