BOSTON, Mass-Rebecca Beyer and Brooke Bingham each scored a goal and Jessica Clinton turned aside the only shot on goal that she faced, as the host Boston University women's soccer team blanked the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in America East women's soccer action on Saturday night.
It marked the Conference opener for the Terriers who won their fourth straight match and fifth in their last six outings. Their overall record is now 5-3-1. In the meantime, the Retrievers, who are Conference members for the first year, slipped to 0-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the league.
The Terriers got the only goal they would need at 37:50 mark of the match when Beyer took a 40-yard pass from Susan Marschall. Beyer came in alone on the right side and her shot to the left corner beat UMBC goalkeeper Robin Barbaris cleanly.
"Rebo (Beyer) and Susan made me look like a genius tonight," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman, who, for the first time this year, moved Beyer up to forward from her usual midfield position. She also moved Marschall up from the back line to midfield. "Susan made a great pass, and she gives us that from the midfield. She has the ability to make that pass."
B.U. added an insurance goal at 54:09 when Meghann Cook began the scoring play when her shot from 15 yards out caromed off the crossbar. The ball came right to Bingham whose shot went off Barbaris into the net.
Clinton, who posted her third shutout of the season, had to make just one save. In the meantime, Barbaris was called on to make five saves.
"Jess wasn't too busy tonight," said Feldman. "However, there were some plays that could have been dangerous and she stepped in and settled things down."
The Terriers, who took 15 of their 24 shots in the first half, had the shot advantage over the Retrievers, 24-2. Both UMBC shots came in the first half.
"It is certainly nice to win our Conference opener," said Feldman. "Plus, with this being our fourth straight win, you can see that our confidence is building."
