Women???s Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision at Harvard
September 21, 2005 | Women's Soccer
Harvard made an early goal stand up and the Crimson continued their mastery over BU, as the Crimson beat the Terriers 1-0 Wednesday afternoon in Cambridge. BU, which dropped to 4-4-2 overall, has never beaten Harvard in eight tries. The Terriers are 0-5-3 against the Crimson since BU elevated women???s soccer to a varsity program in 1995. Harvard improved to 5-2.
Harvard scored the game???s only goal in the 12th minute when Erin Wylie received a midfield pass from Megan Merritt and streaked ahead of the BU defense. Wylie took three dribbles and booted home the goal past onrushing BU keeper Christina Reuter (Madison, WI).
The Terrier offense was unable to generate legitimate scoring chances until late in the game. In the 80th minute, BU had a corner kick by Meghan Cook (Melrose, MA), in which Lauren Erwin (Orange, CT) was able to get her foot on the ball but sent it wide of the goal. Three minutes later, Marisha Schumacher-Hodge (Pittsburgh, PA) missed within inches of tying the game as her shot clanged off the post. Schumacher-Hodge rocketed a shot from the top of the 18-yard line, and the ball curled away from Harvard keeper Katie Shields. Just as it appeared as if the ball would nestle in the back of the net, it hit the left post and bounded away. BU was unable to collect the rebound and the Terriers would not threaten again.
BU outshot Harvard 10-6, and the Crimson, while exerting a degree of offensive control, never mounted a serious threat on goal after their initial score. BU also had a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. Reuter suffered her first loss of the season, as she made two saves, while falling to 3-1-1. Shields had four saves for the Crimson.
BUwill next play on Sunday in its America East opener, as the Terriers travel to Stony Brook to take on the Sea Wolves at noon. BU has one remaining nonconference game this season, at home against Dartmouth on Oct. 12.
