BALTIMORE, Md. - The Boston University softball team completed the series sweep of UMBC with a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore hurler Cassidi Hardy earned the win with a six-inning effort to pick up her 12th triumph of the season, while junior Nora Militz scored the eventual game-winning run with her first homer of the season. The Terriers improve to 26-15 overall and 12-2 in the America East, while the Retrievers fall to 18-24 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
Militz' knocked one over the fence in the third frame in what proved to be the game winner and freshman April Setterlund led with two hits and two runs, while four different Terriers drove in runs.
Hardy pitched six innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits, while striking out two batters. Freshman Kelley Engman pitched in the final inning recording the final three outs to earn the save.
Setterlund led off with a double up the middle and scored on the next at-bat when junior Shayne Lotito drove her in. Junior Melissa Dubay tacked on one more with an RBI double to center field. UMBC responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning with a lead off home run; however, three consecutive fly outs ended the frame. BU upped the lead when Militz went yard with a solo shot to center field.
Over the next four innings the defenses took over, holding both offenses to a combined five hits. However, in the seventh, the Terriers put runners in scoring position with junior Christy Leath's sacrifice bunt and then loaded the bases when Dubay drew a walk. Sophomore Rachel Hebert drove in Setterlund on a sacrifice fly out to left field to move the score to 4-1. UMBC's Stephanie Weigman struck out the final batter to prevent any further runs for crossing the plate.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Retrievers made one final attempt with a run on a ground out, but Engman struck out the final batter to secure the victory.
The Terriers will continue its road stretch with a trip to Maine on Wednesday, April 23 at 3:00 p.m. On Thursday, BU will make the short trek to Harvard for a twinbill at 3:00 p.m.
