March 10, 2009 | Softball
Clearwater, Fla. - The Boston University softball team (10-3) split with Central Michigan (4-8) on Tuesday afternoon, dropping the first game, 7-6, and rebounding with a 6-4 decision in game two. Senior Melissa Dubay led the way, going 4-for-5 with two RBI, while junior Rachel Hebert knocked in two runs in the Terriers' victory. BU will look to keep the momentum in its favor as it will face Ball State on Wednesday (March 11) at noon.
Dubay extended her hit streak to six games with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate on Tuesday, while Hebert, who has hit in seven straight contests, collected two RBI in game two. Senior Nora Militz plated the eventual game-winning run in the second contest on a single through the left side that brought home freshman Kayla Kruper.
Sophomore Kelley Engman was charged with the loss in game one as she fell to 2-1 on the season. In game two, junior Megan Currier improved to 4-1 in the circle, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits, while striking out three batters. Classmate Cassidi Hardy picked up the save, pitching the final two innings and striking out two batters.
In game one, the Terriers took a 3-2 lead in the third frame, but a four-run bottom half of the inning put the Chippewas on top for good. BU responded with three runs over the next two innings - including two-run home run from sophomore Caitlin Rentler in the fifth - but Central Michigan's defense clamped down over the last two innings to hold on for the win.
In the second game, BU built a 5-1 lead by the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single up the middle from Hebert, before the Chippewas closed the gap in the sixth inning with two runs on a wild pitch and an RBI single. The Terriers tacked on one more run in the sixth on an infield single by senior Christy Leath to give them a three-run cushion heading into the seventh inning where CMU scored one before Hardy forced a ground out to end the game.
BU will face Ball State on Wednesday (March 11) at 11 a.m.
