BOSTON - The Boston University women's soccer team battled Harvard to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field. The Terriers kept their home unbeaten streak alive and move to 8-3-2 on the season following the non-conference match while Harvard goes to 6-3-2.
The Terriers and the Crimson ended in a draw for the second straight season, as the two teams battled to a 2-2 ending at Harvard last year. The all-time series now stands at 6-5-5, with Harvard holding the slight advantage.
Senior Megan McGoldrick netted her second goal in as many games for BU when she found the back of the net in the 13th minute with an unassisted strike.
The Terriers' streak of not allowing a goal on its home turf all season came to an end in the 28th minute when Margaret Purce snuck the ball past senior goalkeeper Andrea Green to tie the game. It was the first goal BU has allowed at Nickerson Field since Albany found the back of the net against the Terriers on Sept. 23, 2013.
Green played all 110 minutes in net for BU and stopped one shot while Lizzie Durack and Cheta Emba split the time in net for the Crimson. Durack played the first half and made two saves while Cheta was in net for the remainder of the game and made one stop.
BU finished the game with a 13-6 edge in shots and a 4-2 shots on goal advantage. The Terriers were awarded eight corner kicks but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities while the Crimson took three corners.
McGoldrick netted her third goal of the season at the beginning of the 13th minute with a one-timer from the middle of the box. After the ball bounced around between a few defenders, the senior took control and fired a shot to the top of the net over the reach of Durack to give BU a 1-0 advantage.
Harvard scored the equalizer in the 28th minute with an unassisted tally from Purce, who took the ball from the left side of the net and managed to roll her shot just inside the post and past Green to tie the game at 1-1.
The Terriers recorded two more shots in the remainder of the opening period, with senior Madison Clemens sending her try wide and junior Jamie Turchi firing high.
BU outshot Harvard, 4-2 in the second half but was unable to put a shot on net. The Crimson's only shot on goal in the second period came in the 81st minute on a breakaway attempt by Purce but Green came up in the box to gather the ball and the teams headed to overtime tied at 1-1.
In the first extra period, BU's offense generated some pressure in the final minutes. McGoldrick delivered another corner kick into the box and junior Ana Cuffia attempted a shot but Emba was there to make the save.
Harvard posted the only shot in the final 10 minutes of the game when Marie Margolius sent the ball wide of the net in the 106th minute.
The game marked the second draw of the season for BU as the Terriers also battled then-No. 11 South Carolina to a 0-0 tie on Aug. 30.
The Terriers return to action on Saturday (Oct. 12) and resume Patriot League play when they travel to Easton, Pa., to face Lafayette. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
