Terriers Volunteer in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
October 3, 2016 | Women's Soccer
On Sunday, more than 100 Boston University student-athletes volunteered at the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk on the Charles River Esplanade.
For the tenth-consecutive year, the Terriers arrived at the Esplanade before 7 a.m. and were responsible for registering all participants, directing walkers and handling donations.
In addition to the BU student-athletes who volunteered at the event's registration tables, the entire BU women's soccer team volunteered at the starting line and finish line, cheering on and encouraging walkers as they began or finished their walk.
The volunteer efforts were part of BU Athletics' participation in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Boston's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is the nation's oldest and largest one-day breast cancer fundraiser. Each October the event raises more than $3 million with over 40,000 walkers participating.
"It is great to come out and help the American Cancer Society in their fight against breast cancer," said senior Annalise Routenberg of the women's rowing team. "It is an amazing event and it is such an inspiration to see everyone out here walking."
The community service outreach project was organized by BU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The Terriers have staffed the event's registration tables every year since 2007.
