Bloznalis Named PL Defender of the Year
October 31, 2016 | Women's Soccer
CENTER VALLEY, Pa.—Seven members of the Boston University women's soccer team earned All-Patriot League Honors, including Rachel Bloznalis, who earned Defender of the Year Honors, the conference announced on Monday morning.
Bloznalis' selection as Defensive Player of the Year marks the second-straight season that a Terrier has earned the distinction after her former partner at center back McKenzie Hollenbaugh was named Defender of the Year last season.
The Upton, Mass. native came into the season as the only returning All-Patriot League First Team defender in the conference and was named the Preseason Defender of the Year. Bloznalis lived up to the hype, helping the Terriers shut out five conference opponents this season and limiting Patriot League schools to just 3.33 shots on goal per game. Her leadership on the back line was echoed by fellow captain and wing-back defender, Rachel Blauner, who earned a spot on the All-PL Second Team again this season.
Julianna Chen joined Bloznalis on the First Team after a dominant season in the midfield. Her ability to win aerial balls made her a consistent threat to opponents and her defensive strengths were on display throughout the conference schedule.
Erica Kosienski earned a spot alongside fellow senior, Blauner, on the Second Team after having one of her best seasons of her career on attack. Her spark on offense transcended her statistics this season, making her the player to defend in everyone's game plan. She has the ability to gain possession and get into the box, and has a knack for sending dangerous balls in front of the net.
McKenna Doyle, Jesse Shreck and Dorrie Varley-Barrett all earned All-Patriot League Third Team honors this season. Shreck was one of the most important people on offense this season, using her long-range sniper shot in key moments this season. She finished the regular season leading the team with eight points off of three goals and two assists in conference play.
The 2015 Rookie of the Year, Doyle came back just as strong on offense, scoring two goals and one assist against Patriot League opponents. The sophomore became a big threat from the corner this season, having the ability to send balls from the end line to the front of the goal with incredible accuracy.
Rounding out All-Patriot League honorees, Varley-Barrett took on the crucial role of attacking midfielder this season. Her ability to move the ball into the offensive third proved crucial throughout the conference slate, as she was an important factor in BU's dominance on possession against league opponents.
The Terriers earned the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and a bye to the semifinal round, which will be hosted by Bucknell on Friday, Nov. 4.
