The Boston University men's and women's lacrosse teams continued their partnership with Harlem Lacrosse-Boston on Wednesday, when students from TechBoston Academy in Dorchester visited the BU campus for a day of college awareness and mentoring.
The young lacrosse players arrived on campus Wednesday afternoon and met with BU student-athletes for lunch at the West Campus Dining Hall. The group then took tours of the lacrosse teams' locker rooms, played on Nickerson Field and visited Agganis Arena before taking in the view from Student Village 2 while interacting with BU student-athletes and staff.
The day was part of the Boston University men's and women's lacrosse teams' ongoing partnership with the nonprofit group Harlem Lacrosse, which strives to help high poverty and special education students reach their full potential through mentoring, tutoring and coaching in an effort to build confidence and skill sets on the field and in the classroom.
In addition to hosting the group for BU home games and campus visits, student-athletes from the women's lacrosse team visit TechBoston Academy in Dorchester each Monday for one-on-one tutoring sessions.
"I think it is awesome that we get to expose these kids to our college environment and have them around our student-athletes to show them what they can be," said head women's lacrosse coach Liz Robertshaw. "Getting these kids to think about college is something that is very important."
Founded in New York in 2011 with just 35 students, Harlem Lacrosse now operates eleven programs and serves over 450 boys and girls in New York, Baltimore, and Boston and also launched programming in Philadelphia in 2017.
"This program is a wonderful springboard to give these kids opportunities," said head men's lacrosse coach Ryan Polley, who sits on the Harlem Lacrosse Boston advisory board. "For them to visit BU and hopefully strive to attend a great university like this is something that is important to give them access to."
